The PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy residency was established in 1996 and most recently re-accredited by ASHP in 2016. Allegheny General Hospital is a major, acute care center with designations as a level I shock trauma center and comprehensive stroke center and is an ACPE approved provider of continuing education. Residents in this program are provided an environment to enhance their pharmacotherapy skills in a variety of specialized, critically ill patient populations. The residency program strives to build upon skills gained in PGY-1 residency and refine the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to pursue rational pharmacotherapy in a collaborative environment. Residents who are graduates of this PGY-2 critical care residency would be expected to have gained the educational knowledge to pursue clinical pharmacy and/or faculty positions, as well as board certification in critical care pharmacy.
Residents will participate in a number of required rotation experiences which span a variety of critical care settings including medical, neurosurgery, trauma, cardio-thoracic surgery, cardiology, and emergency medicine. Elective rotations may include further experience in any of the core, required practice areas or others including transplantation, nutrition, advanced heart failure, or burn. Additionally, the program can be flexible and tailored to resident goals, interests, and previous experiences. Participation in practice research, medication use-evaluations, medication safety, formulary, practice guideline development, and various teaching programs are required. Additional experiences include journal club presentations, development of continuing education activities, teaching and student mentorship, participation in multi-disciplinary committees, and inter-disciplinary education. An elective teaching certificate program is offered. Longitudinal experiences include code blue response, unique clinical staffing opportunities, and pharmacokinetic dosing and on-call services.
