University Health System (UHS) is the public hospital district for Bexar County and the primary teaching facility for The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. University Hospital, the health system’s flagship institution which operates 716 acute care and specialty beds, is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s Best Hospitals and ranks as the best hospital in San Antonio and 6th in Texas. UHS is also the first and only health system in San Antonio and South Texas to earn Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, which is widely accepted as the “gold standard” in measuring the quality of care that healthcare consumers can expect to receive. A full range of medical services is available at numerous community clinics, including the renowned Texas Diabetes Institute. University Hospital is home to the premier Level 1 Trauma Center for adult care and the only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in South Texas, serving a 22-county region. The Adult Emergency Department consists of 111 beds including 8 for medical resuscitation and 20 for traumatic resuscitation. There is an 18 bed pediatric emergency department. There are 85 adult ICU beds including medical, surgical/trauma and neurosurgical at University Hospital where provision of care is accomplished by attending physicians, intensivists, residents, acute-care mid-level practitioners, clinical pharmacists and other care personnel. In addition, University Hospital is certified as a Cardiac Cath Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association – the highest level of certification available. The PGY2 emergency medicine pharmacy resident will receive advanced clinical training in emergency medicine, trauma & emergency surgery, surgical/trauma ICU, medicine ICU, and pediatric emergency medicine/ICU. Clinical responsibilities include bedside resuscitation, patient monitoring and daily multi-disciplinary rounds. Electives may be chosen from a variety of areas, including but not limited to infectious diseases, cardiology, neurosurgical ICU, and neurology. Residents will attend regularly scheduled meetings with preceptor to discuss patients and didactic lectures with emergency medicine residents. Research responsibilities include completion of an individual major research project with presentation of results. Publication of results is highly encouraged. Residents also conduct an emergency medicine-related DUE and participate in P&T Committee. In addition, residents provide clinical staffing for the emergency department and respond to “code blue” alerts throughout the hospital. Academic responsibilities include pharmacy student precepting and lecture, case presentations, emergency medicine discussion/journal club, attendance and presentation at pharmacotherapy rounds and pharmacotherapy seminar.
