The Department of Emergency Medicine at University of Michigan has a position available for a lead statistician. We are seeking individuals who have had experience in designing, participating and leading studies in health services research using epidemiologic and bio-statistical methodology. The department has active research projects in the areas of medical decision-making and errors in diagnosis in emergency care. In addition, we are evaluating large claims datasets as well as national datasets for analyzing the epidemiology of errors in diagnosis and their economic impact. Individuals who have had experience in the areas of clinical/medical decision making is of interest but not mandatory. Candidates will actively collaborate on established projects with the team and other clinical collaborators within the school and other institutes, depending on project needs. Analyses may also incorporate longitudinal, complex survey data. We are interested in candidates who have had experience in grant writing as we expect the candidate to conduct independent research and apply for external grant funding. Opportunities to participate as coauthor on manuscripts and acquire additional job related training. We are looking for an ambitious, talented and self-motivated individual with an interest in leveraging our research interests.
This is a one-year, term-limited appointment with the possibility of extension. If the appointment is not extended, the appointment will terminate and will not be eligible for Reduction in Force (RIF) benefits.
Develop analytical plans and conduct statistical analyses using SAS, R and other software as needed. Analyses may include but are not limited to linear and logistic regression, survival analysis, mixed models, propensity score methods, and more advanced analysis techniques.
Create tables, figures, and graphs for presentation and publication. Contribute to the analysis sections of grants and papers.
Conduct power analyses and other analyses needed in relation to grant preparation.
Assist in coordination for the maintenance, updating, and compilation of a variety of complex linked databases, including longitudinal databases. Create new derived variables, run checks on existing data.
Assist with creation and maintenance of documentation for databases, including detailed descriptions of contents and created variables.
Advise other data analysts working on the projects and provide programming and data analysis support for graduate students. Interact with investigators, data managers, students, and other analysts.
Eventually be the lead statistician for the entire research team with a future possibility of managing a team of biostatisticians and epidemiologists.
5-8 years of experience
Master’s in Statistics, Public Health (Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Services), Informatics, Social Sciences, or related field is required.
Substantial experience with statistical software (SAS, R or Stata) and with the management of large datasets required. Must be extremely attentive to detail, responsive, very well-organized, able to multitask, and work in a team.
