The PGY2 Internal Medicine Residency is an ASHP-accredited program designed to develop the specialized skills necessary for a pharmacist to participate as an integral member of an interdisciplinary team caring for complex acutely ill internal medicine patients. Ensuring that all ASHP standards for specialized training are met, the program includes at least four months of required general internal medicine rotations with private and teaching internal medicine teams throughout the hospital system. Remaining rotation opportunities are flexible to be tailored to the goals of the individual resident. Rotations are available in areas such as cardiology, emergency medicine, hematology/oncology, infectious disease, medical intensive care, nephrology, psychiatry and pulmonary medicine. The resident will also participate in other longitudinal activities including committee involvement, on call services, clinical staffing experience and the completion of a research/service project and MUE. Teaching opportunities include the precepting of pharmacy students on rotations, presenting an ACPE-accredited seminar, and the facilitation of small and large group team teaching sessions and journal clubs. Residents may also elect to complete the Academician Preparation Program which confers a certificate upon completion. Upon graduation, pharmacists will be prepared to excel in a career as a pharmacotherapy specialist in the area of internal medicine or other subspecialty and/or assume a faculty role within a college of pharmacy.
Applicants must possess a PharmD degree from an ACPE-accredited college or school of pharmacy and must be eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in the state of South Carolina. Candidates for the PGY-2 residency must have completed a PGY1 residency or have equivalent experience.
