The PGY2 Emergency Medicine residency program is designed to develop competencies necessary for specialized practice in emergency medicine, including pharmacotherapy, emergency preparedness, toxicology, and critical care. The primary focus of the residency is the enhancement of patient care, clinical research, and education. Upon completion of this residency, graduates will be prepared to practice as an emergency medicine pharmacotherapy specialist in academic and/or community acute care environments.
Tampa General Hospital is a 1,010 bed, private, not for profit teaching institution with the only Level I Trauma Center in West Central Florida and one of four burn centers in the state. With 62 emergency medicine beds, 14 Clinical Decision Observation beds and over 95,000 visits annually, TGH is fertile ground for the training of well-equipped leaders in emergency medicine pharmacotherapy. Emergency Medicine resident will be an integral part of the health care team providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care services, including pharmacotherapy consults, pharmacokinetic analysis, drug information, and intensive monitoring of patients on service. The resident will gain a true competence in the management of medical emergencies through active involvement with traumas, cardiac alerts, stroke alerts, resuscitations, toxicology consults, and procedural sedation arriving through the emergency department. The resident will also have the opportunity to enhance their precepting/teaching skills while serving as the primary preceptor for both rotating students and PGY-1 residents and while working hand-in-hand with the medical emergency medicine residency group.
Residents completing this training program will be developed as pharmacotherapy specialists working intimately as a member of the emergency department team to provide safe and cost-effective pharmaceutical care. Residents will display leadership skills, contribute to the pharmacy profession by engaging in scholarly and academic activities, and serve as an active participant in professional organizations focusing in emergency medicine.
Site Special Features: Tampa General has the only Level I Trauma Center in West Central Florida, as well as a regional burn center, regional digestive disorders center, joint center, neurosciences center, children's medical center, and cardiac institute. Clinical rotations will be completed at TGH, while teaching experiences will be conducted at various affiliated colleges of pharmacy, including the University of Florida St. Petersburg Campus, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine College of Pharmacy, and the University of South Florida College of Pharmacy.

Special Requirements for Acceptance: Licensure in the state of Florida, PharmD degree and completion of a PGY-1 residency or equivalent experience is required.
