PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program
The Hackensack University Medical Center Post Graduate Year 2 (PGY2) Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program is an ASHP accredited 12-month program. The program’s primary goal is to offer advanced training in Emergency Medicine pharmacy with an emphasis on the following areas:
Assessment and evaluation of the pharmacological treatment of patients presenting to the Emergency Department
Development and enhancement of teaching and precepting skills through didactic and experiential teaching of student and residents
Development and enhancement of written and oral communication skills
Development of research skills
Orientation (1 month)
Emergency Medicine (6 months)
New Jersey Poison Control Center (1 month)
Critical Care (MICU or SICU) (1 month)
Pediatric Emergency Medicine (1 month)
Infectious Diseases (1 month)
Medical/Cardiac Intensive Care
Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Repeat of required rotation
Other interests as identified
The resident is required to be the primary preceptor for a min of 1 APPE consisting of 2 students/rotation.
There may be opportunities to teach in both small group and large lecture hall settings. Formal conference lectures for the Emergency Medicine Residents is also required.
Opportunity to earn a teaching certificate at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
Though certain responsibilities of the resident are required, the program has the flexibility to develop activities consistent with the resident’s background and career goals. In general, the resident’s responsibilities include:
Attend daily patient care activities at Hackensack University Medical Center and make appropriate recommendations to interdisciplinary treatment teams
Design, monitor, and evaluate treatment goals for Emergency Department patients that consider patient-, disease-, and drug-specific information and ethical considerations
Present educational in-services on pharmacy topics to patients, pharmacy staff, and interdisciplinary treatment team
Supervise pharmacy students on clerkship and/or PGY1 residents
Complete a research project and implementation, as well as present this research at a conference
Applicants should hold a Pharm.D. degree, be licensed (or eligible for licensure) in New Jersey, and possess good communication and interpersonal skills, curriculum vitae, 3 letters of recommendation, and a letter of intent. PGY1 pharmacy residency from an ASHP accredited program is required. The position is available beginning July 1st for a 12 month appointment.
The application deadline is January 3, 2019. Onsite interviews will be scheduled at that time.
Additional Salary Information: Residents receive a comprehensive benefits package from Hackensack University Medical Center. The resident will have on-site parking, lab coat, and meal card support. Financial support is provided for residents to attend ASHP’s Midyear Clinical Meeting and the Eastern States Residency Conference. Financial support may be provided for additional educational conferences as deemed necessary by the residency advisory committee.

In May 2012 we broke ground to renovate the Emergency Department that will include 75 private rooms for our patients. The new ED will also feature specialty-specific wings including Geriatrics, Oncology, Cardiology and Trauma care. Our patient population represents a wide range of cultural diversity with patients of all ages, presenting complaints and acuities.
