This one-year specialty program is designed to provide advanced training in emergency medicine pharmacy practice focusing on patient care, clinical research, and education. The program is designed to allow the resident to become familiar with all aspects of emergency care, including pharmacotherapy, toxicology, emergency preparedness, and regulatory requirements specific to an ED setting. Specialty residents in emergency medicine will demonstrate an understanding and working knowledge of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of disease states commonly seen within the ED. Upon completion of the residency, the resident will be familiar with all aspects of emergency care, including pharmacotherapy, toxicology, emergency preparedness, and regulatory requirements specific to the ED setting. The resident will have developed the clinical skills necessary to practice as an emergency medicine clinical specialist.
The Johns Hopkins Hospital is designated a Level I Trauma Center and is the regional pediatric trauma center as well as the eye trauma center for the State of Maryland. The Hopkins Adult Emergency Department (ED) has a total of 67 treatment beds, including four adult trauma rooms, four critical care rooms, and a separate psychiatric treatment area. In addition, the Adult Emergency Department has dedicated areas for urgent care needs and acute care observation visits. The Adult ED treats approximately 70,000 patients annually. The Pediatric ED has a total of 35 treatment beds, including two pediatric trauma rooms and two critical care rooms, and treats approximately 30,000 patients annually. The adult and pediatric emergency departments primarily serve the neighboring East Baltimore population, but also serve a variety of patients drawn to Hopkins by its specialty services.
