Passages Charter School serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Focused specifically on the needs of immigrant and refugee students. Passages offers a tailored educational program focused on high academic standards and instruction based on students' individual needs.
Basic Job Function:
A School Assistant is extremely responsible, timely, and fulfills all expected duties. They are patient with students, supportive, and also has high expectations for student behavior. They ensure the lunchroom, playground or other designated recess setting are safe for students and are maintained properly. School Assistants should be able to call students to attention, manage students in line, and guide students through the school to their recess or lunch designation quietly. They are able to handle large groups of students, move to different students quickly to support children with their meals and outdoor activities. School Assistants maintain a positive environment and communication challenges and disruptions with their managers. School Assistants are able to stay calm and respond accordingly to emergency situations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise students during meal service including when they are in lines and ensure that students behave properly when partaking in meals.
Maintain general discipline in the cafeteria by ensuring that every students is seated properly at his or her designated place.
Circulate through the cafeteria to ensure supervision of all students within the area.
Dismiss students from the lunch room in an orderly fashion when lunch time ends.
Monitor student behavior during recess periods to ensure safety and acceptable conduct.
Assist students by securing trays and handling seating arrangements. Circulate through cafeterias during mealtimes and assist young students in opening their lunch packs and disposing of used packings.
Ensure that cafeteria furniture is in good repair, is safe to use and inform supervisor of any damages to school property.
Make sure that cafeteria is a safe environment for students by handling maintenance and cleanliness needs properly. Assist cafeteria staff in cleaning spills.
Intervene in fights or arguments between students and make sure that no one is physically hurt.
Report any unacceptable behavior to school management.
Respond to emergency situations such as injuries or food allergies in a proactive manner.
Establish and implement standards of behavioral acceptance and ensure that each student follows it.
Encourage a harmonious atmosphere by encouraging peaceful resolutions to conflicts.
Direct the movement of student to and from playgrounds, lunchrooms and activities areas.
Assess playgrounds for security and report any concerns to the school administration.
Respond to emergency situations such as playground injuries by performing first aid and ensure that any associated paperwork is completed on time.
Assist in formulating and implementing activities and games, appropriate for each individual student group.
Correct or redirect inappropriate playground or lunchroom behavior and communicate any serious concerns to the management.
Some School Assistants will be assigned to supervise naptime for the Pre-K students.
Exceptional interpersonal skills as candidate needs to ensure positive interaction with students at all times.
Ability to communicate calmly with students to resolve behavioral issues.
Experience as a parent volunteer in a school environment preferred
Physical Requirements and Working Environment:
Ability to lift 50 lbs. Sit or stand for extended hours.
