PGY1 Pharmacy Program Overview
The program at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital is committed to provide a superior residency experience to promote the field of pediatric clinical pharmacy. Residents who complete this residency program will have the skills necessary to provide inpatient care for general pediatric patients as a clinical staff pharmacist or transition into a PGY2 pediatric pharmacy residency program. Additionally, the residents will be prepared to serve as a faculty member at a school of pharmacy.

All travel dates and arrangements must be approved in advance. Travel support for the required meetings and conferences will be reimbursed through the department of pharmacy and/or SIUE School of Pharmacy.
To broaden the residency experience, residents are required to attend a variety of meetings throughout the year. These may be departmental meetings, administrative staff meetings, committee meetings, or clinical meetings. Other meetings may be requested at the discretion of the residency program director, preceptor, or pharmacy administrator.
The residency program requires the resident to participate in a research project with the goal to educate the resident on the many phases involved with scientific research. The resident will learn about developing a project proposal, submitting a project to the Institutional Review Board )IRB), collecting data, and presenting the findings to the desired audience. Residents will have the opportunity to choose from a list of research projects reviewed and approved by the residency advisory committee. Residents are expected to complete a teaching certificate program offered through the school of pharmacy at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville (SIUE). Learning objectives for the teaching certificate program will be determined by the facilitators of the program on a yearly basis.
Registration and additional information regarding the teaching certificate program will be sent to the residents at the beginning of each residency year by a representative from SIUE. The residency program director and/or coordinator will be responsible for ensuring registration is completed in a timely manner. At the end of the program, a certificate will be issued to the resident marking his or her completion of the program.
As part of the accreditation standards set forth by ASHP, each resident is required to complete a pharmacy practice component of the residency program commonly referred to as “staffing.” In general, a resident will be required to staff one evening a week and every third weekend after the resident has obtained his or her pharmacist license in the state of Missouri. Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Application Requirements
The applicant shall be a highly motivated individual who desires to attain advanced education and training leading to an enhanced level of professional practice. In order to be considered for the postgraduate year one pharmacy residency position, the applicant shall:
abide by the rules and regulations of the ASHP residency matching program; and
be enrolled in (or be a graduate of) an ACPE-accredited advanced pharmacy degree program or have equivalent experience; and
obtain a license to practice pharmacy in the state of Missouri within the first 90 days of the residency program; and
submit the following information to PhORCAS by the specified deadline:
letter of intent
three letters of recommendations
official school of pharmacy transcripts
