Performs high-quality clinical practices and effective patient management, under physician supervision, in accordance with state regulations, including primary and secondary specialty care in clinical and/or surgical practice settings. Demonstrates technical expertise by assisting physician with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Patient care duties may include education and research. Prescribes medications in accordance with state guidelines. Demonstrates teamwork by communicating effectively and working cooperatively with all members of the health care team. Displays respect for and appreciation for the contribution from all team members in order to foster positive working relationships. Participates in Quality/Best Practice initiatives by utilizing standards and guidelines for cost-effective care delivery in order to continuously improve patient care and enhance outcomes.
The main duties of this position are to cover for the general surgeons (initiate and assist with consults (on the floor or in the emergency department)), complete pre-operative and consultation history and physicals, perform assessments, round with the surgeons daily, remove surgical drains, call the operating room to book/coordinate cases, write pre- and post-operative progress notes, write orders, call consultants, discuss cases with attendings, assist in discharge planning with case managers and assist with coordinating appropriate outpatient follow-up, assess patients for pain management prior to and after intervention, perform minor surgical procedures as need be on the wards (e.g. suturing, removing sutures, injection or aspiration from closed spaces, etc.). Average census is expected to be 6 -15 general surgery patients per day.
Also cover surgical specialties such as vascular surgery (e.g., consults for arteriovenous fistula (AVF) creation, amputations, vascular bypass), orthopedic surgery (e.g. orthopedic consults and post-op follow-up), breast cancer and thyroid surgery patients, urology, ENT, plastic surgery, etc. See patients in pre-op and post-operative areas to ensure continuity of care of patients throughout the entire hospitalization. Other duties that align with inpatient support of surgical patients as needed.
