GENERAL SUMMARY: The mission of Campus Recreation is to enhance the quality of life of our unique members by educating and encouraging the active participation in recreational opportunities that develop leadership skills, foster social interaction and reinforce healthy behaviors. The Assistant Director-Fitness will be responsible for the development, coordination and administration of all fitness programs and services provided through the Department of Campus Recreation.
Performs all program management functions as an expert for the Fitness Program incorporating Group Fitness, Personal Training Programs, Well-being initiatives, Fitness-based Instructional Programs and collaborative programs with academic partners including Exercise is Medicine on Campus. This includes, but is not limited to: scheduling of all activities; oversight and coordination of facilities through identified procedures; analyzing, evaluating and solving all issues related to policy and procedure enforcement; performing all risk management assessments and safety audits; maintaining facility and program management manuals for all areas under individuals' review; developing group fitness formats and training programs based on identified best practices.
Develops and manages the annual program budgets. Performs inventory functions for the Fitness Program. Reviews Emergency Action Plans annually and at each incident to determine applicability to current department standards for consistency and accuracy.
Directs all operations related to the HR functions for the student team hired as Personal Trainers and/or Group Fitness Instructors. This includes, but is not limited to: preparation of job descriptions and job selection procedures; development of orientation programs; preparation and review of in-depth training schedule and training procedures for each team member function; preparation and approval of all timecards and payroll reporting documents; development and review of all supervisor professional development programs; management of all assigned and substitute schedules; creation and maintenance of continuing education opportunities; and evaluation of all team members to verify compliance with generally accepted standards and/or certification requirements.
Performs all human resource functions for 1 Coordinator and 1 Graduate Assistant. Serves as a professional mentor to all team members, developing opportunities for team members to enhance their professional skills.
Develops, teaches and manages educational, non-credit instructional and event programs in all areas of fitness. Teaches the American Council on Exercise (ACE) Personal Training Course through the ACE University Partnership Program.
Performs all facility management and development functions for the fitness studios in the Student Fitness Center.
1. Master's degree in Exercise Science or related field. 2. Three or more years of professional experience required in fitness: experience in a collegiate environment preferred. 3. American Red Cross CPR/AED/BBP and First Aid Basic Certification. 4. Possess one (1) certification in personal training OR group fitness as recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Accepted Personal training certifications include: ACE, AFFA, ACSM, CI, NASM, NCCPT, NSCA. Accepted Group Fitness Certifications include: AFAA or ACE. Certification in the other area is required within one year of employment. 5. Ability to communicate proficiently both verbally and in writing. 6. Ability to demonstrate group fitness technique. 7. Valid Driver's License and/or ability to obtain valid Driver's License. 8. If this position is Security Sensitive or if you are subject to a criminal background investigation based on University policy, employment is contingent upon you passing a satisfactory criminal background investigation. You may not begin work until the criminal background investigation results have been received and cleared by Human Resources.
1. Possess both personal training and group fitness certifications as recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Accepted Personal training certifications include: ACE, AFFA, ACSM, CI, NASM, NCCPT, or NSCA. Accepted Group Fitness Certifications include: AFAA or ACE. Certification in the other area is required within one year of employment. 2. Possess certifications in the fitness specialties planned or currently offered in Campus Recreation. Examples include: yoga, Zumba, cycling, Insanity and aquatic fitness. 4. Possess American Red Cross AED/CPR/BBP/First Aid Instructor Certification or must obtain within one year of employment. 5. Thorough understanding of campus recreation with expertise in one or more areas of recreation. 6. Demonstrated experience with training and supervision of student employees and/or volunteers. 7. Organizational skills in fitness and special event programs. 8. Demonstrated computer skills including Microsoft Office 2010 suite or equivalent product. 9. Familiarity with inspecting facility for risk management and maintenance concerns. 10. Familiarity with a broad range of fitness equipment and the ability to maintain equipment inventory including procurement and lifecycle rotation plans. 11. Familiarity and/or comfort with RecTrac (or equivalent member management software).
