Manager – Innovation Engineering (Degreed) – Institute for Surgical Advancement – Orlando
Florida Hospital Orlando seeks to hire a manager for our Institute for Surgical Advancement who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.
Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed Florida Hospital Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. Florida Hospital Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. M-F, Weekend as needed for Conference Travel; Range between 7 am - 7 pm, 8-hour day on average
Works within the Institute for Surgical Advancement to provide direction and oversight to the Prototype Lab. Manages Lab staff including Engineering Specialists and Interns by providing project responsibilities, objectives and due dates, mentoring entry level engineers and reviewing projects for accuracy. Serves as the consultant and lead for technology and engineering within the healthcare, surgical products, medical or related industry. Applies engineering concepts and methodology to advance the understanding of these systems and improve clinical practice. Works to develop materials, instruments, diagnostic and therapeutic devices, and other equipment applicable to clinical medicine practice. Performs engineering documentation including drawings, validation, testing etc. and assists in developing prototype laboratory. Makes suggestions, recommendations and improvements to internal and external stakeholders on products, and designs based on technical experience. Works directly with industry partners and locates resources (materials, machine shops, outsourcing opportunities, partners, etc.) as necessary. Consults with leaders of departments, business units, or service lines. Adheres to the Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan and to all the rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Assists in obtaining approvals for IRB and works within the Office of Research structure. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Multi-specialty surgical/clinical engineering expertise within the healthcare, surgical products, medical or related industry, healthcare, medical, surgical or hospital product engineering (Preferred)
Knowledge of the unique needs of surgical patients undergoing treatment in clinical trials including device management trials (Preferred)
Comprehensive knowledge of clinical research, particularly as it relates to product development and innovation in procedural and surgical environment (Preferred)
Leadership skills necessary to manage multiple projects (Preferred)
An understanding of regulatory process that oversees investigational research (device) (Preferred)
Ability to formulate budgets and manage revenue generated by the clinical research trial/projects (Preferred)
Product life cycle management (Preferred)
Ability to thrive in an innovative environment (Preferred)
Knowledge of anatomy and engineering associated within the healthcare industry (Preferred)
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering such as Mechanical, Biomedical, Materials or Systems.
Ten years of experience in the development of products/devices
Experience with prototyping, designing, and CAD software
Experience in product design from concept to commercialization
Master's degree in engineering (Preferred)
Experience as an Engineer within the healthcare, surgical products, medical, or related industry (Preferred)
Experience in supporting the development of innovative healthcare products (Preferred)
Experience with robotic equipment and MIS equipment (Preferred)
Experience with electro-mechanical device manufacturing (Preferred)
Experience with troubleshooting in the procedural and surgical environments (Preferred)
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:

Develops and accesses new products, processes and technology in the procedural/surgical environment. Works in conjunction with research nurse/specialist and investigating staff to determine eligibility of patients placed on research trials/initiatives and works with research nurse to ensure appropriate follow-up.
ADMINISTRATION: 20%-25% of time allocated for management, planning and administrative activities for the ISA Prototype Lab.
Oversees administrative and business details to include: preparation and management of budget for projects, also for the required software, hardware and materials needed for the lab; handle the quote, invoice, and billing process for 3D printing services to Health Village companies and other industry partners.
Identifies and creates opportunities for continuing education curriculum or conferences that provide industry specific training for lab engineers that promote best practices and introduce new technology solutions.
Communicates regularly with team stakeholders and executive sponsors about team progress toward goal achievement, critical factors and obstacles.
Manages Prototype Lab Engineering Specialists and Interns. Management includes delegation of project responsibilities, planning project objectives and due dates. Mentors entry level engineers. Reviews projects for accuracy. Checks CAD drawings and signs-off on prototypes before delivery to customers.
Oversees project management and logistics such as project timelines, agenda development, production and distribution of meeting minutes and documents and preparation of reports on project status and activities to various audiences.
Reviews potential internship applications. Contributes to planning prototype annual budget.
Reviews lab equipment needs and ensures function and safety of lab equipment.
Implements steps necessary to meet compliance with internal and outside regulating agencies.
Works with ISA research nurse/specialist and Medical Director and Director of ISA to:
Creates, updates, and implements standard operating procedures (SOP) for the Institute for Surgical Advancement (ISA) prototype laboratory. Writes policies and procedures, and ensures compliance with clinical research standards. Oversees quality and performance by conducting random audits to recognize potential problems, makes recommendations, and follows through with appropriate action.
Enhances awareness of Florida Hospital as a leader in innovation, including conducting tours for potential Health Village partners and industry collaborators. Identifies and recommends opportunities to promote the Florida Hospital brand through project success or other recognition efforts.
Supports production through efficient and effective identification and resolution of line issues and non-conforming product.
Responsible for proper maintenance of the prototype laboratory. Identifies and executes process improvement projects related to the prototype laboratory for the ISA that have measurable impact on product quality and process yield, cycle time, or cost.
Responsible for design transfer from R&D into manufacturing.
Plans and manages time appropriately. Develops project schedules and ensures timely execution of tasks.
Properly documents activities in accordance with best engineering practices, company procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Interfaces with external vendors to source high quality equipment and fixtures and with external suppliers to resolve supplier quality issues.
Creates, reads, and/or interprets engineering drawings and schematics for the purpose of understanding equipment function and product design or root cause investigation.
Maintains the confidentiality of physician, patient and departmental information with no infractions.
Maintains continued professional growth, participates in on-going education seminars or in-service programs. Completes required hospital education requirements.
Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department or division.
