Staff holding the position of Pulmonary Function Technologist serve as an intermediate to a high level resource capable of mostly independent work within the Pulmonary Laboratory when performing routine pulmonary function testing. Staff in this position will have achieved credentialing through the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Certified Pulmonary Technician or a Registered Pulmonary Function Technician. Staff in this position must also meet laboratory requirements for internal certification to perform these tests without direct supervision. Staff in this position will also participate in laboratory quality assurance and equipment maintenance programs, assist with administrative tasks, and provide direct testing oversight to lower-level staff.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Perform routine pulmonary function tests
Perform pulmonary function tests including spirometry, flow-volume loops, single-breath diffusing capacity, dilutional lung volumes, plethysmographic lung volumes, arterial blood gases, maximum voluntary ventilation, 6 minute walk testing, pulse oximetry, maximal inspiratory/expiratory pressures, bronchial challenges and other studies as needed, on hospital inpatients and outpatients. Perform complex pulmonary function studies, including pulmonary exercise tests, oxygen shunt studies and high altitude simulation testing. Take appropriate actions in response to patient distress or medical emergency.
Perform quality assurance tasks:
Perform routine quality control on laboratory equipment at specified intervals. Recognize deviations from acceptable performance and take appropriate actions. Chart and graph quality control values. Assist with complex QA activities as needed. Follow procedures for equipment preventative maintenance.
Check and maintain patient data:
Enter patient data into laboratory database. Make precise measurements from graphic patient test data. Calculate results using manual and computerized techniques. Identify and correct errors.
Report routine results as needed to doctors, nurses, and other medical staff. Interact with patients, doctors, nurses and others in a professional and courteous manner. Recognize and report “critical results” immediately following laboratory procedures.
Assist with staff guidance and oversight:
Serve as a resource for questions from Staff Technicians. Recognize problems and take appropriate actions. Offer advice to ordering physicians regarding appropriateness of tests and significance of test results. Assist with insuring adherence to laboratory, institutional, and governmental policies. Assist with training new staff.
Function as “backup supervisor:
Insure smooth laboratory operation in the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor. Maintain efficient and timely testing and reporting. Make decisions regarding “walk-in” patient scheduling. Allocate staff to meet testing needs.
Find solutions to problems with patients and equipment. Develop ad hoc alternative testing procedures for patients with special needs. Provide hospital clinical staff with feedback regarding feasibility of unusual testing requests. Identify subtle equipment malfunctions and recognize likely impact. Initiate appropriate actions.
Assist with general laboratory duties:
Perform general laboratory tasks as assigned by Laboratory Supervisor or as needed. Participate in staff continuing education programs. Maintain laboratory cleanliness. Perform equipment preventative maintenance. Perform routine and complex quality assurance tasks.
Teach hospital staff about pulmonary function testing:
Assist with the training of medical students, house staff, fellows, nurses, graduate students, and other interested parties about the proper performance of pulmonary function studies.
Participate in research data collection:
Perform testing according to specialized research protocols. Function as laboratory coordinator for research studies as needed. Maintain eligibility and / or certification for participation in studies.
Perform other laboratory duties:
Schedule patient appointments. Help to maintain laboratory cleanliness. Participate in continuing education program. Alert appropriate staff to low supply conditions.
Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
Possession of or eligibility for credentialing through the N.B.R.C. as a respiratory practitioner or pulmonary function technologist.
Thorough familiarity with current A.T.S. standards for pulmonary function testing
Pulmonary Function / Clinical Experience
Two years of experience in a pulmonary function or cardiopulmonary laboratory; or
One year of experience in a pulmonary function or cardiopulmonary laboratory, and two years of experience in one or more of the following clinical settings:
Blood gas laboratory
Critical Care Technologist
Certified Medical Assistant
E.M.T. / Paramedic
Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Technologist
Under exceptional circumstances, substitution of additional relevant clinical experience will be considered
Education: must be a high school graduate with additional college coursework in relevant scientific, mathematical, or technical disciplines.
CPR certification or must obtain certification within three months of employment
The following factors, in addition to the minimum qualifications described above, shall be highly desirable in a Pulmonary Function Technologist:
Experience in an academic medical center
Experience with the specific equipment used in our laboratory
Pulmonary function analyzers
Cardio-pulmonary exercise system
Past participation in large-scale nationwide clinical trials
ALS, EMT, CPR Instructor, or similar high-level emergency preparedness training
Strong interpersonal and quantitative skills
Technical qualifications or specialized certifications: Complete mandatory on-going training necessary to schedule new and follow-up appointments as appropriate.
Supervisory responsibility (indicate the number and type of persons supervised by incumbent): back-up supervisor
