Job Requisition Number: 25539. The Nursery Technician serves the Oxford Facilities Unit (OFU), which is part of the College of Natural Resources on the Berkeley campus. The OFU consists of 3 research/ teaching greenhouses located at Oxford Tract/Berkeley, and teaching/research fields located at both Oxford Tract (1 acre) and Gill Tract/Albany (5 acres). Incumbent will be an integral part of a 6-member OFU staff team serving the researchers using the Oxford Tract greenhouses and Oxford Tract/Gill Tract research fields.
Under the supervision and with periodic monitoring of nursery techniques by the greenhouse manager, incumbents independently assess watering needs of plants, and independently perform routine nursery and maintenance duties. Incumbents are expected to work independently and consult with greenhouse manager, Senior Nursery Technicians (SNT), and upper level staff when new operational questions arise. Incumbents use nursery techniques to assist greenhouse manager, SNT, and upper level staff in broader scope maintenance, management, and disease control issues while learning specialized knowledge and skills necessary to perform higher level tasks.
Water Plants- Under supervision of greenhouse manager, attend to daily nutritional needs of plants in the greenhouse: •Give attention to varied experimental watering designs, on a daily basis, as established by staff and students • Inspect inside greenhouses and water up to 3 times daily as necessary; water outside in the lath houses once daily; i.e. water as frequently as necessary to accommodate daily weather conditions •Work weekends and holidays as assigned to water plants •Assist with weekend or holiday watering in case of staff illness or emergency
Greenhouse Maintenance- Assist in monitoring and troubleshooting greenhouse facilities and equipment; and in monitoring the daily routine functional needs of a research greenhouse: •Assist in monitoring greenhouse temperatures daily •Assist with operation of common greenhouse equipment, autoclaves, metal halide lights, and nutrient pumps •Assist with washing, cleaning, and autoclaving of dirty pots, flats •Assist in room clean-up for disease control •Assist in maintaining inventory of supplies •Assist in field seasonally as necessary •Prepare nutrient solutions as needed •Supply and remove soil, bench boards, pots, plants, and miscellaneous greenhouse supplies as needed for greenhouse experiments •Autoclave plants and materials as needed for confinement of transgenic research and disease control •Moniter greenhouse drains and floors, monthly and clean as needed •Perform errands as needed •Weed greenhouses, lath houses, and landscaped areas around facility
Greenhouse Management- Assist in coordinating daily operational needs of faculty, staff, and students using a research greenhouse: •Perform daily assigned activities and inform manager of conflicting priorities •Maintain flexibility in schedule so as to be able to change priorities on a given day if unpredictable problems arise in the greenhouses •Assist in room monitoring and maintenance •Assure compliance with EH&S guidelines for transgenic plants
Greenhouse Safety- Actively participate in all safety programs, and assist manager in identifying and correcting safety hazards within all greenhouse facilities: •Actively participating in greenhouse safety training programs such as Building Emergency Plan; Illness, Injury, and Prevention Program; Hazardous Waste Training Program; Contingency Plan for Hazardous Waste Accumulation, respirator safety program, and pesticide safety training program •Assuring compliance with EH&S guidelines for safety procedures when pesticides are being sprayed •Complying with all applicable policies and regulations •Using all necessary personal safety gear which includes but is not limited to goggles, gloves, respirators, ear plugs, etc. as necessary •Observing all warning signs •Learning about potential safety hazards and immediately reporting unsafe conditions when observed
Plant Propagation and Care- Under supervision of greenhouse manager, plant and transplant seeds in healthy soil as requested by faculty, staff, and students: •Maintain a planting and transplanting schedule as directed •Maintain long term experiments through pruning, reinforcing, harvesting, and autoclaving harvested plants as necessary
Insect and Disease Control- Under supervision of greenhouse manager, assist in monitoring and controlling plants for insects, and greenhouses for rodents in an effort to maintain a healthy, disease free, insect controlled environment: •Alert manager of unusual symptoms and/or growth patterns which might be indicative of insect damage, disease or nutrient deficiency •Perform Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) testing for tomato and pepper plants as necessary for management and control of the virus •Participate in rodent abatement programs •Participate, as needed, in application of pesticides•Ability to wear a respirator when necessary while working in the greenhouses •Ability to independently lift and carry up to 40 pounds •Ability to perform routine work independently and in a team •Ability to prioritize assignments under pressure •Effective communication and organizational skills •Ability to commute to both the Oxford Tract in Berkeley and Gill Tract in Albany •Ability to work in a physically demanding environment •Ability to work weekend/holiday rotational hours
Education/Training: •High school diploma; ability to read, write, and perform basic math calculations •Two years of training and/or greenhouse, nursery, or horticulture experience
Licenses or certifications: •Valid CA driver’s license and ability to drive a full-size automatic pick-up truck
