The Nurse Practitioner, reporting to the Director of Health Services, is responsible for the physical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and/or referral, teaching, and follow-up of clients. The practice includes adult and adolescent medicine and gynecology.
Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:
Direct Patient Care: a. Demonstrate clinical knowledge and competency in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of patients while exhibiting sound clinical judgment; b. Maintain and manage patients utilizing lab, x-ray, and other diagnostic testing as well as perform phlebotomy and other lab collection to complete lab orders; c. Prescribe and/or administer appropriate medication, corrective measures, and medical therapeutics; d. Initiate emergency treatment of acute medical problems, consult with a physician, or refer to urgent/emergency care as appropriate; e. Coordinate with outside providers to assure continuity of care; f. Provide patient education and conduct patient follow-up, when needed; g. Maintain clinical documentation.
Administrative Support: a. Support administrative work of the Office of Health Services to include efficient office functions, patient flow, and communication; b. Contribute to the optimal function of Health Services by working cooperatively with all staff to accomplish goals and objectives.
Staff Oversight: a. Participate in the ongoing direction and oversight of the clinical support staff; b. Oversee the care provided by the registered nurse and be available as a referral source.
This is a Per Diem position with approximately 1-2 shifts per month on an as needed basis with 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM hours.
A Registered Nurse with a Master's degree in nursing is required as well as at least two (2) years of nursing experience. The chosen candidate must be licensed by the state of Rhode Island, CPR certified, and possess certification as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive privileges. Candidates must be available to provide occasional after-hours patient follow-up by phone and be able to utilize electronic medical records.
Three to five years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner caring for young adults or in college health is preferred. Areas of experience should include general internal medicine, gynecology, mental health issues, orthopedics, and urgent care/emergency medicine.
At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
