Scientific Director of Florida Hospital Cancer Institute - Orlando
Florida Hospital seeks to hire a Scientific Director who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

Job Summary :
The Scientific Director is responsible for leading the research enterprise for the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute (FHCI). Provides bi-directional leadership in science and translational research and develop cross-functional investigational research capabilities, leading to a higher prevalence and success rate for excellence in Investigator-Initiated Trials (IITs). The Scientific Director will foster institutional awareness of IITs, identify programs and approaches to prepare more and better IITs, and enhance the success rate of winning IITs, across all sponsor types. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
Skills, Education & Experience Required :
Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with all levels of staff—executive, management and staff—both written and verbally
Self-motivated and detail-oriented, with good organizational, follow-up, computer, and analytical skills
Ability to conduct oneself professionally, maintaining confidence, confidentiality, integrity and objectivity
Skilled use and knowledge of the Internet and the following computer programs: Adobe PDF Reader, Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel)
Medical Doctorate (MD) OR
Doctorate of Medicine and of Philosophy (MD/Ph.D.)
Minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience
Minimum of seven (7) years of research experience
Strong background in oncology research and translational research (preferred)
Ability to lead and mentor teams and foster collaboration (preferred)
Ability to bring external research funding resources, including federal and industry funding (preferred)
Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) (preferred)
National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding (preferred)
Experience in leading a specialty research enterprise (preferred)
Licensure, Certification or Registration Required :
Active Board Certification in Hematology and Oncology
Job Responsibilities :

Scope of Responsibility :
Provides scientific oversight over Florida Hospital's emerging Scientific and Protocol Review Committee (SPRC), designed to open impactful and high enrolling studies, facilitate efforts to drive enrollment, monitor progress of trials, and help evaluate sun-setting of trials that are well below enrollment goals.
Drives formation and sustainability of structures and processes needed to carefully vet opportunities in the selection of clinical trial opportunities, assess feasibility tracked to biostatistics, evaluate publication/citation merit, and report on trial portfolio.
Builds relationships with programs connected to oncology including: Translational Research Institute for Metabolics and Diabetes, the Center for Interventional Endoscopy, Digestive Surgical Institute, Global Robotics Institute, Institute for Surgical Advancement, and related departments and institutional partners in oncology and immunology.
Develops precision medicine and molecular Tumor Board functions and help recruit a leader to manager this board.
Provides phenotypic context for translational research (involving blood, tissue and pathology), developing collaborations connected to longitudinal care. Support efforts with cancer epidemiology, providing context for translational research, health analytics, personalization, value-based care, navigation, episodic and chronic analytics, electronic patient outcomes, and other emerging areas supporting oncology research.
Organizes and leads faculty physicians across the continuum of care in oncology, across a network of hospitals, clinical and translational research sites at multiple locations in Central Florida, the ‘I-4 clinical research corridor’. In concert with the Senior Director of the FH Research Institute serving FHCI, he/she will grow and streamline our existing leadership and support teams to develop multi-campus presence for enhanced care.
Compliance/Regulatory Responsibility :
Accountable for assuring compliance and providing evidence of performance with entities such as Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Serves on committees including but not limited to protocol review of Institutional Review Board (IRB) trails.
Operating & Capital Budget/Financial Responsibility :
Provides input to leadership to ensure all departments within scope of practice operate within allocated budget.
Prepares, executes and monitors operating budgets to ensure appropriate staffing, professional development, space, supplies, equipment, etc., for maintaining and improving quality of service and performance standards as applicable within scope of responsibility
Strategic Planning Responsibility :
Establishes the strategic direction for FHCI, develop her/his own individual research, and help mentor other physician scientists toward a more impactful program. Efforts will include building relationships with system leadership, collaborating with senior faculty investigators within Florida Hospital, developing partnerships with external collaborators, mentoring junior faculty investigators, and evaluating strategies for growth and targeted opportunities in a high volume clinical enterprise.
Work closely with clinical and research leadership in departments connected with FHCI—including Solid Tumors, Bone Marrow Transplant / Hematology, Head and Neck Surgery, Pancreatic Surgery, Surgical Health Outcomes Center.
Performance Improvement Responsibility :
Connects with operational elements of Florida Hospital Research Institute to help improve processes, establish Key Performance Indicators (KPI's), and become a more attractive partner for sponsors.
Staffing/Labor/Supervisory Responsibility :
Leads discussion and manages the workforce planning and employment decisions, champions a diverse workforce, interprets and evaluates employee satisfaction and quality of work surveys, taking action as needed to ensure a positive outcome.
Participates in the definition of Human Resources management and planning instruments for the scientific teams of the infrastructure
Ensures appropriate orientation for new staff and appropriate methodologies for ongoing competency assessment of staff. Monitors and ensures timely completion of performance evaluations, sets goals, and provides feedback and counseling to employees. Rounds with employees on regular basis, engaging staff and leading on maintaining environment of safety.
