Daily responsibilities will include design of experiments and conducting various chemical transformations. Use of techniques such as, NMR, LC-MS, and HPLC will be done on a daily basis.
The successful candidate will work in partnership with cross-functional teams to design and synthesize novel small molecule ligands of varying complexity for potential drug targets of interest to GSK.
This individual will plan and implement efficient synthetic routes to complex molecules of interest both independently and under guidance, applying state of the art purification, and characterization techniques for lead optimization and SAR generation.
This individual will also develop an understanding of medicinal chemistry and molecule design strategies, set priorities and coordinate work schedules in agreement with team and department established priorities, develop new synthetic methods as needed, help identify and implement innovative new technologies, keep a detailed laboratory notebook and cross-referenced data files and keep his/her supervisor informed of status of work through written and oral reports and initiate new research directions and novel strategies to achieve “project” or department goals or technology advances.
Basic qualifications: A Master's degree with 0-5 years or a Bachelor's degree with 3-7 years' experience in organic chemistry focused on synthesis and/or methodology.

Preferred qualifications: Expertise in organic chemistry reaction mechanisms, techniques and methodology consistent with a graduate level. Experience applying emerging synthetic, purification, and characterization techniques for accelerated complex molecule synthesis toward lead optimization/SAR and identification; experience conducting large scale/multigram synthesis; excellent written and oral communication skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc.) in regard to preparing oral and written reports and analyzing data is strongly preferred. Some experience using Molecular Operating Environment software for molecule design and Schrödinger Live Design for collaborative drug discovery while not a requirement, would be advantageous.
