A Surgical Technology Student Extern is a Non-Certified PRN employee. A student extern will perform in a "Second-Scrub Role" capacity and is allowed to hold retractors, cut suture, sponge, suction and manipulate an endoscopic camera. They will also participate in opening surgical cases, room turn-over, putting extra supplies, instrumentation and equipment away and picking cases. Additionally, the student intern may be scheduled to take 2nd call on weekdays and weekends as needed.
Minimum Education Requirements
High School Diploma or GED
Must be enrolled in a CAHEP Accredited Surgical Technology Program and successfully placed in a clinical rotation.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association
Registered with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) as a surgical technologist.
Job Responsibilities (essential functions identified with a * )
Supports surgical services by performing tasks in the operating room, sterile core and sterile processing areas, within their scope of practice and competency.
Supports surgical cases through scrubbing under the direct supervision of a qualified surgical technologist or registered nurse, may hold retractors, cut suture, sponge, suction and manipulate a laparoscopic/endoscopic camera.
Assists in the cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, setup and putting away of equipment, instruments, and supplies
Assists in patient care including positioning and transporting of patients.
Enhances the efficiency of the department, including opening surgical cases, room turn over, room set up, and pulling/picking instruments and supplies.
Applies knowledge of the dress code related to OR Attire requirements and Standard Precautions and consistently wears appropriate personal protective equipment.
Participates in personal and professional development by attending department in-services, meetings and by seeking out opportunities to learn.
