The Department of Anesthesiology and Froedtert Hospital are seeking a full-time, Board Certified Physician in Anesthesiology to serve as the Senior Medical. Director of Perioperative Services/ Vice Chair of Perioperative Management.
The Senior Medical Director of Perioperative Services/ Vice Chair of Perioperative Management is responsible for directing and coordinating patient flow to achieve optimum utilization, patient satisfaction and quality outcomes. The role is designed to facilitate growth of clinical volume consistent with the department, medical school and hospital missions; to integrate teaching and research into the clinical enterprise; and to foster a climate of high performance across the OR team.
The Senior Medical Director of Perioperative Services/ Vice Chair of Perioperative Management partners with OR leadership to implement the strategic objectives of Froedtert Hospital and The Medical College of Wisconsin with respect to surgical services. . Specifically, the Senior Medical Director of Perioperative Services/ Vice Chair of Perioperative Management partners with the Senior Medical Director for Surgical Services, a surgeon, to ensure the smooth, timely, efficient and high-quality provision of care to patients throughout the peri-procedural episode. The perioperative management leadership team also includes the Vice President for Perioperative Services, the Director of Surgical Services (a nurse leader) and the Director of Business, Finance and Planning. The two Senior Medical Directors—an anesthesiologist and a surgeon—together with the VP and Directors, comprise the core leadership group for surgical services. The Vice Chair and Senior Medical Director will work closely with leaders in other procedural areas requiring anesthesia services. The Senior Medical Director of Perioperative Services is a full participant in the planning of delivery of surgical and procedural services and advocates for all policies that have been agreed upon by the leadership team.
The Senior Medical Director of Perioperative Services/ Vice Chair of Perioperative Management participates with the Senior Medical Director for Surgical Services, the VP and the Directors in deliberations surrounding perioperative care in all important committees and groups touching the surgical enterprise, namely:
Surgery Council (the advisory body for Perioperative Services)
OR Operations Group (monthly meeting with Froedtert Hospital President, Chief Medical Officer, Medical College Physicians Chief Executive Officer)
Reports to (Title): Chair of Anesthesiology, Chief Medical Officer and President of the Hospital
Direct Reports (Titles): OR Director, PACU Director, Out-of-OR Director, Director of Preadmission Testing Director
Collaborates with (Titles): Senior Medical Director for Surgical Services; Vice President of Perioperative Services; Director of Surgical Services; Director of Business, Finance and Planning.
Demonstrates, understands and supports the mission, vision and values of Perioperative Services within Froedtert Hospital.
Demonstrates, understands and supports the mission, vision and values of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Department of Anesthesiology.
Works collaboratively with the perioperative leadership team to develop and advance the goals of the surgical enterprise.
Spends 80 % of time in role as Senior Medical Director and 20% of time in the operating room environment as the Anesthesiologist-in-Charge
Works collaboratively with colleagues and leaders to develop and advance the goals of the Department of Anesthesiology.
Provides daily on-site management for all anesthesia services.
Integrates anesthesiology workflow with OR charge nurses.
Optimizes allocation of block time.
Continues to develop scheduling rules.
Participates in prioritized PMC projects and OR projects.
Works jointly with surgeon leader, admin/FH staff leader and PAT leader in strategic planning and surgical services initiatives.
Develops/reports metrics and goals.
Develops and responds to requests for new or additional services.
Delivers communication throughout the department relating to surgical services.
Utilizes the operating principles of the OR as a guide for decision making and improvement.
Assists the Hospital and Medical School in strategic planning related to annual goals in surgical services.
Collaborates with Hospital leadership in the development and implementation of new programs to ensure the continued growth and development of the enterprise.
Assists in recruiting and retaining excellent staff and leadership.
Assists in reviewing and prioritizing capital requests.
Participates in Capital Budget.
Participates in Capital Management.
Represents the Medical College of Wisconsin in regional and national organizations and societies and participate in anesthesiology and meetings, societies and associations at a national level.
Increases national visibility for the division and department through clinical, research and academic achievement.
Encourages and supports diversity among the division constituents, creating an environment of professionalism, collegiality and respect.
Models exceptional clinical care of all patients. Provide cutting-edge, compassionate care of the highest quality and safety.
Develops and oversees quality improvement efforts including clinical outcomes, specific treatment outcomes, timeliness outcomes and patient quality of life.
Develops strong regional relationships with a referral network of physicians to impact how services are delivered throughout the region.
Oversees high-quality education programs, seminars and conferences for trainees, faculty, community-based providers and referring physicians.
Continuously improves the productivity and scope of the clinical practice while enhancing the quality, safety and efficiency of the patient experience.
Promotes interdepartmental collaborations and encourages cross-discipline improvements in the delivery of patient care.
Provides Oversight for:
Responsible for daily faculty/staff/resident/CRNA schedules
Responsible for Anesthesiologists-in-Charge (AICs)
Ensure that first cases are in the room and start as scheduled
Coordinate the preparation of “to follow” cases through the day to minimize turn-around-time and maximize room utilization
Optimize daily OR utilization
Respond to emergencies and deploy anesthesiology services as needed
Conduct a complete hand-off to anesthesiology providers as they arrive to provide care through the night
Supervise all clinical faculty, CRNAs and CAAs
Be physically present in the OR to address daily operating issues
Responsible for OR subspecialty teams
Manages work flow service levels for the PACU
Monitor OOOR anesthesiology activity and provide appropriate services
Director of Preadmission Testing
Assist in recruiting faculty to assess patients in the preoperative clinic
Coordinate preoperative optimization of surgical patients
Develop a structured means of communicating significant preoperative findings to the anesthesiology care team
The Senior Medical Director of Perioperative Services/ Vice Chair of Perioperative Management will be a clinical specialist of the highest level of accomplishment. He/she should have prior administrative and clinical experience as a leader in a nationally recognized academic program. The Senior Medical Director of Perioperative Services/ Vice Chair of Perioperative Management must be able to work in a highly collaborative environment, possess strong leadership and organizational skills and have the ability to work effectively in a large health system. The successful candidate must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Wisconsin and be board certified or have equivalent qualifications in compliance with the MCW credentialing processes. The successful candidate will have at least six years of experience in an academic setting. The following skills and qualities are also essential:

The Senior Medical Director of Perioperative Services/ Vice Chair of Perioperative Management will assume clinical, administrative and academic duties. The exact breakdown of clinical vs non-clinical time is negotiable; however, the expectation this individual will be at least 1 day/week clinical and function as the Anesthesiologist-in-Charge on that day and will spend 80 % of his or her time as Senior Medical Director
