Shift: Days; 8 or 10 hour shifts. Call requirements possible in the future.
Performs various patient care activities in the GI Lab/Minor Procedure department under the supervision of a physician and nurse. Assists physicians and nurses with cases and daily functions of the department. May assist with medical procedures. Ensures that all equipment is clean and functioning properly. Prepares room for procedures.
Minimum Education Requirements
High School Diploma or GED
Completion of a medical/clinical vocational training or certification preferred, i.e. CNA, LPN, Medical Assistant, etc.
Minimum Experience Requirements
One year of GI Lab Tech experience strongly preferred; related experience required
Basic computer skills
Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
Current Colorado CNA or LPN license or Medical Assistant Certification preferred
Position Duties (essential functions denoted with an *)
Uses physician preference card to identify supplies and equipment needed for the scheduled procedure. Submits updates to preference cards with any necessary changes. *
Accepts room assignment as directed by the supervising RN which includes assisting the physician with all procedures scheduled for that room (i.e, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, EGD, Colonoscopy, Peg Placement, Liver Biopsy, ERCP and Minor Procedures). *
Under the supervision of a Physician or Registered Nurse, observe patients during recovery for potential problems that require intervention. Reports the problem to the appropriate person(s). *
Takes vital signs on patients and documents as needed. *
Assists the Registered Nurse with procedures that require two or more people. *
Assists RN with patient and family education. Explains procedures through the use of pamphlets and diagrams.
Contacts Registered Nurse or Physician if further patient/family education is needed. *
Anticipates patient and family needs while managing priorities effectively. *
Performs safe and timely transport of patients. *
Effectively communicates with Physician and Nursing staff; anticipating possible problems or complications that could arise during case. *
Demonstrates commitment to identifying and meeting customer/patient needs promptly, respectfully and effectively.
Prioritizes and manages expectations appropriately. *
Demonstrates knowledgeable of all equipment and surgical instruments used for GI procedures (i.e., rectal tray, hemostats, scissors, sutures, etc). *
Assemble instruments and equipment for scheduled procedures. *
Checks sterile supplies for expiration daily. *
Cleans and disinfects scopes, instrumentation, trays and gurneys using the prescribed method. *
Changes disinfectant in basins, checks for strength of concentration, verification of sterilization and maintains records. *
Sends instruments to the Central Processing Department for sterilization as needed. *
Assures that sterilized supplies and instruments are correctly tagged, labeled and stored. *
Troubleshoots problems with endoscopic equipment. *
Performs daily maintenance checks of endoscopic equipment and alerts staff and/or leadership when repairs are needed. Responsible for packaging and tracking equipment to be sent out for repair. *
Participates in safety check/documentation of biological indicators and equipment. *
Assists in room turnovers, set-up, stocks supplies and terminal cleaning of procedure rooms. *
Applies knowledge of the dress code related to Standard Precautions and consistently wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). *
Reports any life safety issues, environmental concerns or process deviation to immediate supervisor. *
Maintains a customer friendly rapport with peers and internal/external customers. *
Maintains cooperative working relationships with others. Communicates appropriately and professionally with peers. *
Maintains thorough and confidential maintenance of patient charts and records. *
Documents interventions in an accurate and timely manner. *
Ensures that work environment and patient rooms are neat and orderly to enhance unit and hospital image. *
Uses standards of care, hospital policies/procedures and regulatory guidelines to guide work. *
Assists with quality improvement, safety and regulatory functions as directed. Participates in process change to improve practice. *
Maintains high skill level through ongoing education/meeting attendance and shares knowledge with staff members. *
Assists in training other GI Lab Technicians, students and other hospital personnel. *
Adapts to rapidly changing technology as evidenced by competency in technology and equipment used in the patient care setting. *
Demonstrates effective time management and is proactive in prioritizing workload and meeting productivity requirements. *
