The Physician Extender (PE) will provide routine follow-up care to patients with diabetes, patients with other endocrine diseases and obese patients participating in weight reduction program. The PE will be in the outpatient clinic evaluating patients. He/She will determine the clinical needs of the patients independently and recommend therapeutic and behavioral changes, adjusts medications, order laboratory test and alert physicians in emergency situations. He/she will also participate in the insulin pump program. The PE will also participate in the education of medical students, residents and other health care professionals and will supervise the section personnel providing clinical services.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners; or graduation from a Nurse Practitioner Program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee and licensed by the NC Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Organizational Unit Overview:
The Division of Endocrinology provides many training programs for both diabetes patients and future endocrinologists. A Self-Management Patient Education Program recognized by the American Diabetes Association is available as well as training and education for insulin pumps and other health-related issues for people with diabetes.
Residents and medical students can take advantage of specialized training through lectures and clinical rotations. Community education also occurs on topics of diabetes and osteoporosis.
