Covenant House Illinois (CHIL) marks the 30th Covenant House location, and is the first site to open in a new state in nearly 20 years. Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, Covenant House Illinois supports the chief mission of providing youth experiencing homelessness with comprehensive crisis care and ongoing support. We are looking to fill the Youth Advisor (Per Diem) position.
Reports To: Director of Program Implementation (Covenant House - Illinois)
Purpose of Position: This position provides direct, individualized, supportive care to youth who attend day service programming and/or reside in the residential program while establishing good rapport with staff and partnering agencies.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Ensure the provision of the highest quality delivery of services to youth in accordance with the Covenant House Mission Statement and Principles and Core Values.
Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of client goal plans.
Participate in team case management, case review, transition and team meetings.
Supervise all youth activities and engage youth in a positive manner.
Ensure a safe, healthy environment which reflects Covenant House principles.
Escort youth to external activities.
Facilitate and monitor group support services including activities and meetings.
Document information using case files, ETO, and HMIS regarding all client interaction, caseload progress and outside agency contact.
Ensure supervision of youth access for showers.
Make bagged breakfasts and lunches for youth and distribute as needed.
Provide laundry assistance for youth as needed.
Assist with locker assignments and maintenance.
Participate in special projects which enhance the experience of the youth.
Ensure accurate and timely tracking, documentation, and reporting of data and statistics as required for agency reports using HMIS and ETO.
Provide assistance with events/activities as assigned or directed by the Associate Executive Director and/or Case Manager.
Must be able to work with youth that have poor social skills, suffer from mental illness, and have substance abuse problems.
Must be dedicated to the mission of Covenant House.
Perform all additional job duties as assigned.
Work environment and physical demands:
Required to do light physical work.
Regularly required to remain stationary for some periods of time; use hands and fingers; communicate; move; occasionally required to position self to stoop, kneel or crouch; frequently required to reach with and use arms and hands.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to focus.
Must be able to walk upstairs and lift up to 10 lbs.
Work environment for this position includes an offices and residential space with a low to high noise level.
Education & Experience
Bachelors degree required or must be within one (1) year of completion of BA degree.
One-year experience in a residential setting and one year experience working with adolescents preferred.
Experience in working with at-risk youth preferred. Must have a valid license New York State Drivers License and be comfortable driving seven-passenger van.

As a part of the Covenant House Strategic Plan, we will open hundreds of new supported beds for homeless youth across Canada, Latin America, and the United States. We hope to reach an additional 10,000 youth annually through our residential and non-residential services, including health clinics, and job training programs and schools. An important step of our expansion was the 2017 opening of a new site - Covenant House Illinois (CHIL) in Chicago.
