Florida Hospital Orlando seeks to hire a Radiation Oncology Brachytherapy Surgical Technician - Certified who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.

The Florida Hospital Cancer Institute serves more cancer patients than any other health system in Florida. We provide a comprehensive continuum of services ranging from disease prediction and prevention to state-of-the-art detection, treatment and research. Patients have convenient access to the latest in medical and radiation oncology, patient support and education programs, and a dedicated team of highly-qualified physicians and certified oncology nurses. The Oncology practice at Florida Hospital Orlando provides the best in compassionate and positive faith-based care. Our 39-bed Medical Oncology unit provides chemotherapy and symptom management for the adult oncology patient population. The 39-bed Surgical/GYN Oncology unit is specifically trained to meet the complex physical and psychosocial needs of oncology patients during the post operative period. This unit specializes in care of the GYN Oncology population during all phases of their disease process. The Oncology Progressive Care area provides care for patients with an oncology diagnosis that require upper level monitoring and care from Critical Care trained nurses to include high dose chemotherapy, cardiac drips, and respiratory management for the PCU-level patient. The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit team is dedicated to complex specialized care of critically ill, adult and pediatric peripheral blood stem cell and bone marrow transplant, leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma patients. Chemotherapy is also provided on the 16-bed unit.
Under general supervision, a surgical scrub technician/nurse assists with the patient care in surgery by performance of technical and other delegated duties. Functions as a member of the surgical team, as a scrub person by providing care to surgical patients of age specific groups identified in the unit standards of care (may include neonate to geriatric). Adheres to the Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
Knowledge of Radiation Oncology clinical pathway (Preferred)
Graduate from school of surgical technology or LPN program or RN program, or completion of a military training program that includes surgical technology skills
Experience in the clinical setting related to area of specialty (Preferred)
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:
LPN Program Graduates: Current valid State of Florida or multi state license as a Licensed Practical Nurse
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification
CST Certification or CORT certification OR Completion of an RN training program
Certified Surgical Technician License (Preferred)

PATIENT SAFETY: Surgical technician practice reflects the application of knowledge, skill and adherence to all pertinent regulatory standards. Follows strict infection prevention precautions. Adheres to policy and procedure regarding all aspects of medication safety. Practice reflects importance of patient teaching and takes advantage of opportunities, both planned and unplanned, to carry it out in accordance with plan of care. Follows CDC isolation guidelines, appropriately uses PPE, and performs hand washing according to policy. Strictly adheres to all infection control practices and diligently monitors aseptic technique of the entire surgical team. Takes immediate corrective action for breaks in technique.
COMMUNICATION: Promotes an exceptional patient experience by abiding to compassion and image standards and fostering excellent nurse-patient relationships through effective/therapeutic communication with the patient, family, and visitors, including but not limited to and as applicable, hourly rounding. Exhibits ability to utilize appropriate techniques, verbiage, and resources in all interactions with the patient to their level of understanding. Communicates effectively with interdisciplinary team by completing thorough hand off communication in all situations. Follows chain of command when appropriate.
DOCUMENTATION: Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the recording and accessing of all patient information in electronic medical record according to policy and in real time. Performs appropriate and legible documentation, recording all procedures and assessments within established timeframes, and in accordance with standards of care, departmental policy and practice guidelines.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Abides by American Nurses Association Scope, Standards and Code of Ethics. Participates in practice changes, process improvement initiatives and completes all required education by the due date. Supports quality standards and initiatives set by the department. Exhibits desire to learn, teach, mentor and advance nursing skills.
Communicates with patients to manage their understanding and preparation for brachytherapy procedures. Manages patients' related needs after their brachytherapy procedure. Is responsible for reviewing the schedule ahead of time to prepare the clinic for upcoming brachytherapy appointments. Supports the customer and employee satisfaction activities of the organization. Maintains good relationships with physicians, management, other departments and staff. Investigates and responds to complaints in a timely manner. Provides support in the Radiation Oncology clinics as needed.
Performs the role of the surgical technician throughout procedures. Maintains consistent communication with circulating nurse and surgeon. Ensures that all supplies, equipment, and medications are assembled prior to the procedure. Facilitates the flow of the surgical procedure and the events that happen thereafter. Is responsible for helping to get patient to Imaging suites on time in preparation for Brachytherapy treatment. Assists in recovery of the patient after anesthesia administration.
In an efficient and organized manner, assists team with safe, clean and appropriate operating room turnover times. Participates in room turnover and cleaning of brachytherapy instruments. Is responsible for accounting for all the necessary brachytherapy and surgical equipment. Provides support as needed to members of the surgical team. Supervises other healthcare team members in the surgical environment. Utilizes knowledge base to assist with orientation, training, and the education of new personnel.
Is innovative in maintaining high standards and quality in the facilitation of cost savings and containment. Participates in practice changes as a result of performance improvement activities. Supports quality standards and initiatives set by the department. Adheres to all policies and procedures.
