The Department of Pathology is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Manager that will reports to the Laboratory Director and/or Assistant Administrator and is responsible for all operational activities of the assigned laboratories to include Histology (clinical and research samples), Immunofluorescence, and Electron Microscopy. Responsible for the efficient utilization of assigned resources and for planning future research and development, staffing, equipment and space. Develops capital and operating budget requirements designed to meet current and future needs of the laboratories. Develops with the Assistant Administrator department goals, objectives, operational policies, and procedures. Responsible for monitoring the adherence to JHU, JHH, and departmental policies and procedures in the laboratories across all shifts. Assists with the development and administration of laboratory budgets. Performs other related administrative and professional duties. Required attendance position.
Duties & Responsibilities
Supervises, orients, trains, and develops staff of assigned laboratories. Plans, coordinates staffing patterns to effectively and efficiently support the department.
Participates in the specification, design, implementation, and modification of projects related to assigned labs. Prepares test plan data to ensure quality and integrity.
Responsible for compliance and audit preparation of assigned laboratory area for CLIA, CAP, The Joint Commission, and other regulatory reviews.
Operation, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment related to this specialty. Ordering of supplies and acquisition of equipment and procurement of service contracts.
Performs clinical testing when short staffed. Serves as a point person for clinicians and other health care workers to answer technical and clerical questions related to testing. Trouble shoot and problem solving issues related to ordering of tests and other related issues. Analytical ability to operate technical equipment, perform tests with the highest degree of accuracy and to relate tests results to a normal, healthy state and to the presence of disease.
Support and training for staff, students, residents and others.
Attendance in meetings (including national), as required.
Equipment, Machine, or Tool Requirements
Computer, Copier, Telephone, Fax. Laboratory tools and equipment.
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field required. 10 years' experience in lab specialty required, preferably in a related laboratory. Related Master's degree may substitute for some experience.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Master's degree, preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration
ASCP certification or equivalent technical certification, preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities / Competencies
Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment in a specialty lab.
Computer competency is required. Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and training skills.
Work Environment /While performing the duties of this job
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing). Occasionally required to traverse throughout the laboratory or to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations on campus. The employee is required to operate computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides. Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory work stations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment.
Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
Laboratory environment - Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed. Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas. Able to read and understand all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area. Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment. Research areas may include animal, human, human products, DNA, and radiation protocols. Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.
May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus (specify)). May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes or Formalin cubes). In some areas work space is limited.
Staff may be required to complete annual competency review, and must insure compliance with Johns Hopkins Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices.
Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules which may include weekend work and holiday assignment. (Overtime possible when authorized/needed to meet business and patient needs).

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
