What you will do:
The Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA) seeks a Patient Care Administrator, who is a seasoned and effective healthcare professional to serve as an integral member of the hospital leadership team. Able to establish credibility based on a broad level of leadership and technical experience and expertise, you will provide clinical operational oversight to the Companion Animal Hospital (CAH), the small animal emergency and specialty component of our hospital system. Responsibilities will include 24-hour accountability for quality patient care, management of our central nursing care units, a client centered professional customer experience, efficient work and teaching environment, protocol and regulatory compliance and very importantly a positive workplace culture that encourages individual growth and organizational change. This position is instrumental in supporting and improving our clinical nursing and hospital structure in order to maintain our standard of care and strong DVM teaching program which develops practice ready, critically thinking veterinarians with strong communication skills.
Lead the planning, creation and implementation and administration of a broad array of group and individually tailored training, professional development, and on-boarding programs for the hospital system.
Develop patient safety and hospital quality improvement programs initially for our companion animal hospital but with broad vision of the hospital system needs.
Assess current and future organizational needs in all arenas, including facilities, IT, HR and workflow by gathering input, building partnerships in the college and university, and engaging all hospital constituents including leadership in college IT, HR and facilities groups.
Plan and execute emergent and planned hospital projects in collaboration with the hospital medical, business and project leadership.
Build effective relationships with a variety of constituents while adhering to the principles of a teaching hospital, establish credibility and accessibility to the nursing staff, and manage interpersonal issues that arise in a fast-paced and emotionally-intense environment with unpredictable and diverse caseloads.
Collaborate with the service chiefs, faculty members and trainee clinicians, clinical administration and other managers to identify ‘bottlenecks’ and formulate solutions and initiatives to remove barriers in medical operations that would impede the clinicians from providing exemplary patient care and customer experience.
Develop, implement, update on a rolling basis, and maintain clinic/nursing SOP's that are consistent with current veterinary practice; exercise considerable judgment in applying professional knowledge when solving nursing problems within established policies and practices.
Provide expertise in staffing and scheduling; coordinate nursing human resource matters, including but not limited to evaluating staffing needs, recruitment and hiring of staff, orientation of new staff, documentation and monitoring staff performance, directing workflow and establishing work schedules.
Serve as a facilitator and coach to nursing staff; seeking and providing regular and constructive feedback, as well as continual ongoing awards and recognition for staff accomplishments and milestones; understand and fully support the critical nature of effective and honest, timely feedback to a high-performance workforce.
Assist in the effective use of hospital IT infrastructure for efficient operations, including record keeping, communications, coordination of clinician, patient, staff and student scheduling, as well as patient billing.
Work with management to ensure compliance with Federal and State law regulations, and applicable accrediting and review organizations.

What are the Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Health Care Administration, Veterinary Technology or related field, with 3-5 years progressive responsibility as a leader in a healthcare environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience, with a proven track record of identifying, developing and implementing process improvement initiatives.
Energized by developing others and understands how people learn and how change happens at the individual and organizational level.
Has experience in developing and executing quality improvement, training and safety initiatives in a healthcare setting.
Experience in a teaching environment and work experience in a 24/7 veterinary hospital is strongly desired.
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrix organizational environment with limited guidance.
Demonstrated excellent judgement and experience in decision-making; Strong organizational, multi-tasking and analytical skills; willing to manage multiple tasks in a hands-on manner – adjusting to issues as they arise.
Understand the critical balance between the administrative, teaching, and clinical functions in the veterinary heath care system.
Demonstrate initiative and self-motivation to follow through on responsibilities in a timely manner.
