Salary and Benefits The anticipated salary range for this position depends on qualifications, experience and salary budget, and will not exceed $15.00 an hour. Upon appointment, employees with 0.75 or greater time base, but do not meet other criteria for full benefits, will be eligible for medical coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The same type of coverage will be offered to hourly intermittent employees, who work an average of 130 hours or more per month, after an evaluation period defined by the ACA.

Conditions of Employment This is a part time, temporary, non-exempt position. Reappointment to this position is dependent upon the individual's performance as well as administrative and budgetary considerations. The university reserves the right to terminate this appointment earlier than the scheduled expiration date.

Under general supervision and reporting to the Assistant Director, Board Operations and with additional lead work direction provided by other management of the Culinary Services team, the incumbent within the Food Service Series is responsible for meal and menu planning; food preparation, serving, cleans-up, maintenance of food service equipment, utensils and work areas. Under general supervision, the Food Service Worker I (FSW I) will assist in the preparation and/or serving of food and beverage and is responsible for cleaning and maintaining culinary equipment and work areas within established standards. This position will assist in training and providing work direction to student employees, and may recommend items for ordering to the Food Service Worker Lead and/or Management personnel.
Under general supervision, the major duties for the Food Service Worker I include, but are not limited to, the following:
Prepares and serves quality food and beverage in a timely manner per Sous Chef guidelines;
Relieves cooks, bakers, meat cutters by performing routine operations such as stirring foods, greasing pans, and grinding meat;
Maintains work area(s) in accordance with set standards;
Follows all health and safety guidelines;
Provides work direction, effective leadership and training for student employees on job functions for a specified area;
Maintains cash drawers and change funds; operate a POS; secures cash per cash guidelines and maintains a cash accuracy level of +/- $2.00 from master journal tapes or safe counts;
Restocks food and paper products;
Attends meetings and assists in planning, organizing and assigning tasks to students;
Fosters and delivers exceptional service and food products following established guidelines.
Performs other secondary duties as assigned.
Work primarily takes place in one of the various kitchens around Sonoma State University. The normal work schedule is hourly intermittent to meet operational needs of the department. As a non-exempt employee, any request for overtime will be specified and pre-approved by Appropriate Administrator. Your specific start time is determined by your Appropriate Administrator. Overtime, evening and weekend hours may be required and will be specified only by the supervisor to meet operational needs, including working the University's commencement day which is regularly scheduled in May. Position must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator.
This position requires, with or without reasonable accommodations, the ability to frequently sit, move or stand for long periods of time, including working indoors and outdoors and/or in a hot kitchen. The incumbent must be able to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop and kneel and lift objects of up to 50 lbs in weight.
Qualifications Requires a working knowledge of the methods for cleaning and preparing foods as well as cooking and storing foods; proper methods of arranging dining room furniture, setting tables and serving meals; various types of food service utensils, and equipment; and sanitation and safety measures in a food service environment. Requires the ability to portion servings, follow directions, keep records, and read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
Requires excellent customer service skills; ability to provide effective leadership to student assistants working in this program; ability to work independently and have the ability to motivate self and others toward a common goal; ability to operate in a professional, fast-paced environment, ability to accept constructive feedback and work as a member of a team. The Food Service Worker I must display a professional and hospitable attitude to all. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the university and establish and maintain productive and effective, inclusive working relationships amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents. Must also possess the ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economy, society, environment) into all aspects of performing job duties.
The Food Service Worker I must possess and maintain a food handler card, which has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Requires a current, valid California Driver's License and must successfully pass a pre-placement physical.
