Join the AMA team as the Director, Research and Program Evaluation in the Strategy Unit - Medical Education. As part of the team, you will be working in conjunction with departmental leadership, to develop and implement educational research and evaluation efforts for the AMA’s Accelerating Change initiatives. These initiatives focus on implementing and sustaining innovation in the key domains of Health Systems Science (HSS) along the continuum of medical education.
Other Responsibilities will include:
Leads the educational research activities for the undergraduate initiative (see changemeded.org) and the emerging GME initiative. Responsible for designing new and/or maintaining current databases; using databases to conduct research to achieve goals of these strategic initiatives. Participates in quantitative and qualitative data analyses and preparation of reports and manuscripts for presentation and publication. Directs the management of the collaborative database including interaction with administrators, evaluators, and AMA staff members (including programmers). Supervises assigned staff members in the development and management of databases, data analyses, and written materials.
Works with members of national organizations (e.g., National Board of Medical Examiners, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and Association of American Medical Colleges) in the development of new evaluation measures reflecting innovations in HSS content and assessment.
Represents departmental leadership at national meetings and conferences focusing on medical education and evaluation.
Leads, mentors, and educates assigned staff. Provides oversight and defines accountability for team members. Provides ongoing evaluation of staff performance.
Provides educational evaluation and research consultation (on both qualitative and quantitative methods) to participants in the UME and GME initiatives, to departmental program staff, and to the AMA focus area initiatives. Includes new instrument development, conceptualization and implementation of research design and statistical analyses.
PhD in education or related field with research experience required.
Three to five years of experience working in medical education or health care setting; familiarity with the organization and process along the continuum of medical education.
Five years of experience in educational program evaluation and research, preferably in topics related to learning, learning tools, assessment, or curriculum. Record of publication in peer-reviewed journals required.
Experience with research databases (SAS, SPSS, and NVivo): data collection, data transfer, analyses, and interpretation.
Experience in mixed-methods collaborative (multi-institutional and/or multi-site) educational research and program evaluation. Experience with IRB protocols required.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills with a track record of scholarship and presentations required.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to establish, work with, and meet deadlines.
Ability to work independently and/or collaboratively as indicated by the situation.
