SUMMARY OF POSITION Under the direction of the Medical Director, the Associate Veterinarian is responsible for providing a variety of animal healthcare duties in the clinic, shelter, and mobile surgery unit, mainly in the areas of surgeries and wellness procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES •Promotes and maintains the humane care and treatment of animals at all times while assuring the safety and health of animals at both the clinic and the shelter. •Performs medical examinations, surgeries, and assists in the monitoring of the health and welfare of animals in the care of the both the clinic and the shelter. •Performs spays and neuters on our mobile surgery unit, the Neuter Scooter, in varied locations as scheduled. •Administers standard treatment, including oral and injectable medications, vaccines, microchips, etc. •Prepares and administers pre-anesthetics, IV anesthetics and gas anesthetics. •Assists with or performs euthanasia when required, according to clinic procedures. •Oversees the maintenance of an acceptable level of safety, cleanliness and sanitation necessary for the function of the clinic, prep room and recovery area. •Reports equipment, structural or operational problems or deficiencies that may affect the care of animals or the operation of the clinic or medical areas. •Advises and assists with training of staff, volunteers and clients regarding veterinary issues of potential concern. •Enters and completes notes into veterinary software and communicates notes to owners in a timely manner. •Assesses and monitors patients before, during and after surgery. •Monitors patient test results daily. •Checks VBSPCA email daily and responds to any matters. •Fully participates in clinic efforts to achieve established goals for productivity. •Attends VBSPCA staff meetings and trainings as required. •Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
OTHER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES •Serves as the on-call emergency veterinarian for the shelter animals one Sunday per month (additional compensation provided, per VBSPCA policy). •Provides care to injured wildlife as needed, including emergency euthanasia, in accordance to provided training. •Attends annual Continuing Education conferences, meetings, and trainings, as required. •As directed, acts as a liaison to the veterinary community on behalf of the VBSPCA. •Keeps abreast of developments in the field of veterinary medicine, particularly aspects of special concern to shelters, including disease prevention and overpopulation control measures like early spay/neuter, and their implications for clinic operations and programs. •As needed, obtains information and training to spay, neuter, and treat all species of animals cared for in the clinic and the shelter. •Observes and complies with all applicable Federal, State and County laws, regulations and ordinances, including OSHA requirements. •As schedule permits, participates in Human Education Department’s "Vet for a Day" program, on an as-needed/volunteer basis.
This position performs in accordance with the organization’s expectations for animal care, teamwork, and interpersonal relations, and actively contributes to improving service delivery, communication and consistency.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS •Doctorate in veterinary medicine from an accredited university or school of veterinary medicine required. •Must possess and maintain all necessary licenses, permits, certificates, and credentials required by the laws of the United States, the State of Virginia, and all other appropriate governmental agencies, including any certification and credentials required. •Must possess and maintain independent insurance and provide proof to VBSPCA. •Must be a practicing veterinarian licensed in the State of Virginia. •Experience working with animal welfare organizations, community groups, volunteers and governmental agencies preferred. •Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS •Ability to work cooperatively with people and to communicate clearly about VBSPCA’s mission, the care and treatment of animals, and the safety of the public and other employees. •Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and Saturdays, in a fast-paced setting. •Must be able to work assigned schedule without conflict or tardiness. •Excellent public relations, oral communication, and written communication skills. •Ability to communicate clearly VBSPCA’s mission and the humane care and treatment of animals to public and staff. •Must have professional presentation and demeanor. •Must be able to represent VBSPCA professionally at all times. •Ability to relate to VBSPCA volunteers, staff, Board members, and members of the community. •Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays in a fast-paced setting. •Able to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment. •Attention to detail, quality and accuracy required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS •Ability to communicate effectively in English. •Ability to comfortably interact with animals, including wildlife. •Ability to restrain animals in a safe and appropriate manner. •Able to be exposed to cleaning chemicals and offensive odors. •Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds. •Ability to sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle or operate objects, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. •Ability to handle stress. •Ability to move throughout the building as needed to meet the requirements of the job.
