Under the direction of the Chief, Microbiology and the Clinical Pathology Laboratory Administrator the SL-5 Associate Technical Director, Microbiology is responsible for the day-to-day administrative and technical operations of the Microbiology Laboratory, delegating duties as appropriate and according to established policies & procedures. This includes maintaining all regulatory accreditations and permits in accordance with regulatory standards and established policies & procedures e.g. NYSDOH CLEP,CAP CDC, JC, etc.
Duties may include the following but are not limited to:
1a. Responsible for the day-to-day technical operations of the Microbiology Laboratory. Delegates responsibilities to sub-section Bench Supervisors and/or Senior Technologists as appropriate. b. Maintains the Microbiology Laboratory's accreditation by compliance with all established standards, i.e. NYSDOH, CAP, JC, CLIA etc. c. Adheres to Corporate Compliance Plan and participates as a member of the Laboratory Compliance Committee. Identifies compliance issues as per Laboratory and Corporate Compliance Plans. d. Ensures staff has current licensure per NYSED regulations. e. Reviews policy and procedure manuals and ensures that they are current and meet regulatory requirements. Proactive in policy & procedure development. f. Responsibility for appropriate inventory control of supplies and reagents. g. Ensures equipment is maintained for optimal efficiency. h. Participates as a member of Laboratory CAP team.
2a. In conjunction with the Laboratory Director & Chief, Microbiology, the Clinical Pathology Laboratory Administrator and according to SBUH established Human Resources (HR) and Labor Relations (LR) policies and procedures, recruits and selects, promotes and demotes and schedules technical, clerical and support personnel for the Microbiology Laboratory to insure the highest standards of technical excellence for the delivery of patient care services. b. Development and implementation of staff training and cross training, competencies, and performance programs and evaluations according to SBUH established HR and LR policies and procedures. c. Holds routine staff meetings and ensures staff compliance with SBUH & departmental Policies & Procedures.
3. Revenue Cycle Coordinator for Microbiology Laboratory a. Reviews current test menu for testing opportunities for revenue generation and brings these forward to the Laboratory Administrator. b. Responsible for development of cost saving initiatives for the Microbiology Laboratory. c. Develops Business plans as assigned. d. Responsible for charge-master management according to established policies & procedures.
4. Develops, implements and oversees the monitoring of the Quality Control Program, for compliance with the standards established by the New York State Department of Health, College of American Pathologists, and other pertinent regulatory agencies.
5. Oversight of LIS staff training to ensure efficient workflow.
6a. Oversees instruction of technical staff in Microbiology Laboratory methodologies and principles using customized curriculum approved by the Chief, Microbiology.
b. Oversees instruction of Medical Technology student in Microbiology Laboratory methodologies and principles using customized curriculum approved by the Chief, Microbiology. c. Oversees instruction of Pathology residents and fellows in Microbiology Laboratory methodologies and principles using customized curriculum approved by the Chief, Microbiology. d. Participates in continuing education and in-service education programs within the Microbiology Laboratory. e. Participates, as appropriate, in lectures given through the School of Allied Health Professions at Stony Brook. f. Provides guidance to the Send-out section(s) staff of Specimen Receiving for any Microbiology testing requests.
7a. Collaborates with the Laboratory Quality Systems Manager for Quality Assurance initiatives, Safety programs and Benchmarking projects. Implements and monitors for Microbiology Lab to ensure regulatory compliance. Knowledgeable with benchmarking principles and is proactive when collaborating with the Quality Systems Manager & Clinical Pathology Laboratory Administrator. Able to utilize metrics to request additional resources as appropriate.
b. Oversees resolution of Facilities & Housekeeping issues. Performs Housekeeping and Facilities rounds with bench supervisors on a routine basis.
8. Responsible for development, implementation and monitoring of the following budgets:
9. Plans, coordinates and implements reorganization or expansion of laboratory facilities to meet the needs of changing or emerging clinical services. Collaborates with Business Manager on reagent rental vs. buy analysis for capital equipment. Independently develops cost/benefit analysis, value analysis and revenue enhancement projects and presents to the Chief, Microbiology and Clinical Laboratory Pathology Administrator.
10. In the event of non-conformance ensures that results are not reported until corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
11. Works in a collaborative manner with peers (e.g. SL-5 Associate Technical Directors, CSC staff, etc.) to reach a mutual goal in intra-laboratory processes to ensure the highest level of patient testing services.
12. Works closely and in a collaborative manner with the Healthcare Epidemiology Department staff to reach mutual goals and acts as a resource to their staff.
Required: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related degree. Licensed by NY State Education Department as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist. Expertise in related theory, principles, practices, applicable instrumentation, analytical methods, quality control, statistical analysis, LIS, current Clinical Laboratory standards, e.g. NYSDOH CLEP, CAP, etc. current government regulations and leadership. A minimum of eight (8) years pertinent general Clinical Microbiology Laboratory experience of which four (4) years have been spent working within a clinical laboratory having a director at the doctorial level. At least two (2) years' experience in a supervisory capacity in a clinical laboratory having a director at the doctoral level. Excellent written and interpersonal skills.
Preferred: Master's degree in a related field. Microbiology specialty certification. Clinical Microbiology experience in an Academic Medical Center. Experience in one or more of the following subspecialties: Parasitology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology.
