The City of Cambridge Department of Public Works is seeking a highly motivated Engineer to manage the implementation of our asset management program for the City’s sewer and drainage systems and construction associated with public works capital improvement projects. This position will require a thoughtful experienced professional who can lead the implementation and on-going management of the asset management program and manage construction projects that are consistent with the City’s goals of fostering neighborhood vitality and a healthy urban environment. Under the supervision of the City Engineer, the Engineer will perform the following duties:
Manage City’s implementation of asset management program for City’s sewer and drainage systems.
Manage sewer abatement program; including coordination with property owners, site inspections, and inspection of meter installations. Coordinate with other City departments such as Finance and the Water Department.
Manage construction, maintenance, and/or repairs by contractors of municipal infrastructure including: streets and sidewalks, sewer, drains, utilities, parks, buildings and related facilities.
Manage and administer all aspects of public works construction contracts, including schedule, budget and quality control.
Review, permit and oversee construction of public infrastructure performed by private entities on behalf of the City.
Inspect construction, maintenance, and/or repairs by contractors of municipal infrastructure including: streets and sidewalks, public utilities, parks and related facilities.
Coordinate the construction of public works projects with residents, property owners, business owners, other city departments, state and federal agencies and other stakeholders.
Review building permit applications to ensure that proposed work is compliant with DPW standard specifications, accessibility requirements, stormwater management goals and streetscape design standards.
Assist in emergency situations as required including, but not limited to, significant inclement weather events and participate in a 24 hour a day on call rotation.
Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering and 3 years experience in utility construction or wastewater operations is required. Professional registration or EIT (Engineer in Training) Certificate is preferred.
Ability to manage and administer public works construction contracts.
Familiarity with sewer system maintenance and operations. Experience with asset management systems.
Collection Systems Certification Program, Grade IV Collection System Certification preferred.
Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to accessibility, sewer use and stormwater management.
A valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s License Class D is required.
Knowledge of complete streets designs, emphasizing superior accommodation for bicyclists and pedestrians.
Knowledge of engineering principles related to the design and construction of municipal improvements. Ability to coordinate/communicate with contractors and the public.
