The Rockefeller University seeks a Chemical Waste Handler to join Laboratory Safety and Environmental Health. The Chemical Waste Handler will be responsible for the collection, sorting and packaging of chemical waste and will serve as back-up for the collection and processing of biological waste. This includes the collection of properly labeled waste from the laboratories and physical plant facilities, the sorting and processing of the waste, combining bulk liquids, packaging biological waste, assisting in maintaining the chemical waste processing areas in a safe, clean, organized manner, labeling waste for in-house storage as well as commercial disposal, and moving and managing waste drums. Will assist the Chemical Waste Manager in all aspects of the chemical management program and management of waste facilities, database and record keeping, clean up emergency spillage, and laboratory clean outs. As the primary backup for the Biological Waste Handler, the Chemical Waste Handler will pick up biological waste from laboratories, scan biological waste for radioactive contamination, prepare waste for shipment as Regulated Medical Waste, maintain a clean biological waste room, and maintain documentation and archive green biological labels.
Must complete HM 181 (DOT) training every three years, be willing and able to wear and use appropriate respirators, and must have (or be willing and able to obtain within 6 months of employment) OSHA HAZWOPER 24-hour training. Knowledge of laboratory hazards, exposure control, and hazardous waste disposal methods a plus.
