The Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health (IDGH), combines four important areas of expertise within Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. These are public/population health, global health, wildlife/conservation medicine, and infectious disease research. The alignment of these areas promotes cross-disciplinary strengths with a focus on improving human, animal and ecosystem health locally, nationally and internationally. The department is comprised of clinicians, basic science faculty and staff who are dedicated to teaching, clinical service, and promoting global health and to conducting impactful scientific research.
The Department Manager has responsibility for the business and academic support functions of the Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health. This includes management of administrative staff who also provide support for academic faculty; shared responsibility with the Department Chair and Tufts Budget Center, for the development and management of the department budget, including budget projections and labor reporting; managing the department budget impacts of academic program delivery, grant expenditures and salary offsets; and providing support for DVM, MS, and PhD student services within the department. Works closely with the university Research Administrators who provide pre- and post-award research administration to the department's faculty at the department level. Hires, trains and supervises the other department staff who support the department's faculty and academic initiatives. Responsible, in support of the chair, for supporting the departmental faculty hiring process, academic appointment renewals for full and part-time faculty and supporting the departmental faculty promotion process in collaboration with the chair and Faculty Affairs Office, preparation of promotion dossiers. Interprets and enforces University and Department policies and guidelines for faculty and staff. Supports Department Chair in project planning and special projects.
Bachelor's Degree with 5 years of experience. Strong administrative and organizational skills are required as well as advanced computer skills including knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Adobe Acrobat Writer as well as the internet, social media and emerging media. Strong communication and team leadership skills. Valid US driver's license. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. with or without accommodation.
5 years in an academic management support setting. Successful management and supervisory experience preferred. Also, superior organizational skills, ability to work independently, strong attention to detail, ability to interact diplomatically with a wide variety of constituents and to work effectively as part of a team. This position requires a person who is self-motivated, requires minimal supervision and can perform in a sometimes-stressful environment, meeting multiple deadlines under pressure during busy times. Should demonstrate initiative and good judgment with confidential information. Must bring positive outlook and develop enthusiasm for our mission.
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Flexibility to work earlier or later than schedule when needed to meet the requirements of the Department Chair's work flow.
