The Office of Safety and Environmental Health is currently seeking a Health Physicist to supervise radiation safety technicians, manage technical health physics operations. radiation surveys of high radiation areas, setup and calibration of RCU radiation measurement instruments, manage bioassay and environmental monitoring program.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise Radiation Safety Technicians engaged in conducting inspections and audits of radioactive materials laboratories.
Perform health physics surveys of high radiation operations, for example: Cyclotron, PET Center, Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, and gamma irradiators.
Perform quarterly radiation survey audits of clinical RAM use areas.
Establish and administer a mandatory bioassay monitoring program.
Perform certification surveys of x-ray producing equipment.
Evaluate monthly personnel radiation monitoring results and investigate and determine corrective actions for high radiation exposures.
Evaluate airborne radionuclide concentrations from isotope hood exhaust systems and determine what corrective or remedial actions are required.
Teach general radiation safety classes for staff, employees, and students.
Assist Laser Safety Officer, involving; approve laser operational procedures, audit laser equipment in labs, training of users in laser safety, investigate laser accidents.
Provide professional level health physics coverage during an emergency involving contamination and/or injured personnel, on site or at a medical facility. Evaluate radiological incidents to determine the cause and corrective action.
Determine operating parameters of counting equipment (detector efficiency, detector resolution, detector reliability, energy calibration, and background determination).
Perform sealed radioactive source leak tests.
Calibrate portable radiation survey equipment, environmental area radiation monitors and sampling equipment.
A Bachelor of Science Degree in the sciences, engineering, or health physics and four years technical experience in a radiation safety program for a "broad scope" radioactive materials license for a medical institution. Demonstrated knowledge of the following:
Applicable regulations, ie. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Food and Drug Administration, and State of Maryland;
Technical issues related to licensing, investigations, and complaints;
Theory, principles and practices in the field of health physics.
Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
An advanced degree in health physics or related discipline desired.
