SoBran is seeking a Research Support Specialist I (Rodent Quarantine Manager) to serve at the National Institutes of Health campus in Poolesville, Maryland.
OVERVIEW: Responsibilities of this position are that of a Research Support Specialist – Rodent Quarantine Manager for the NIH, Laboratory Animal Care Project. These responsibilities include all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of laboratory animals. This person is expected to be familiar with the day-to-day activities, personnel and issues within the facilities. We expect the individual to be forward thinking and create and assist in developing plans to enhance the learning abilities and performance of the staff working on this contract. The position will assist the Program Management in the efficient allocation of the budget and develop and maintain an effective relationship with the Government staff.
Description of Duties:
Understand and follow all SOPs and Quality Assurance Standards
Alert veterinary staff and supervisor of emergencies, signs of abnormal or poor health, abnormal behavior or other animal concerns
Alert supervisors of any facility variances or concerns and document as instructed
Perform and document animal health checks
Perform animal husbandry duties as assigned
Perform and document daily facility and room maintenance and sanitation as assigned
Safely and correctly handle animals
Maintain all documentation records accurately
Ensure supplies are kept at adequate levels
Receive, examine, transfer, identify and properly house shipped or transferred animals
Prepare and submit required written records, charts, logs and inventories as requested by the Task Manager
Collect, preserve, and prepare blood, urine, fecal and skin samples
Assist investigators with protocol specific needs
Maintain quarantine colony management and record keeping
Assist other animal caretakers as assigned
Lead by example in ways that exceed the expectation of the staff
Assume a position as a team leader which includes helping to prepare the floor, solve everyday problems with minimal supervision, assist other caretakers, and supervisory staff while maintaining an air of professionalism.
Assume shared responsibilities with other defined staff in the absence of the Task Manager
Participate in weekly technical or SOP training
Assist and/or perform ANY contract related activity as assigned by the Task Manager
Perform all other duties as assigned
Schedule Requirements: All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned. Works hours may vary but typically are schedule between 6:00 am and 3:30 pm M-F, and 5:30 am-1:00 pm on weekends and holidays.
Required Experience: 2-3 years prior laboratory animal experience preferred
A BA/BS in the Animal or other related science
A High School diploma and equivalent experience
Certification: Employees must hold a current AALAS certification at the LAT level, or achieve this certification within one year of appointment to the position.
Compensation: Commensurate with education/experience
