Iowa State University’s Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center is currently offering a Residency in Equine Internal Medicine designed to prepare residents for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the specialty of Large Animal Internal Medicine. The residency program is three years in duration (reappointment pending annual review).
There are currently 3 equine ACVIM diplomates and 2 food animal ACVIM diplomates in direct support of residency training, with additional diplomates in related specialties. The equine medicine resident rotates primarily through the internal medicine service and shares emergency duties with 2 equine surgery residents. Time is allotted to rotate through other services such as equine surgery, anesthesia, food animal medicine, and radiology with the option for further rotations at other institutions.
Residents also participate in clinical rounds, seminars, journal clubs, continuing education programs and various section and departmental academic programs. Iowa State University serves as the main equine referral institution for Iowa and several surroundings states and maintains a high caseload including a variety of periparturient maternal disorders and neonatal care.

Prerequisites other than being a Graduate of a College of Veterinary Medicine
A candidate must have successfully completed a one-year rotating internship. Applicants must have graduated from an AVMA accredited veterinary college, or have successfully completed the AMVA ECFVG Certification Program or PAVE Certification Program at the time of application.

Applicants must have graduated from an AVMA accredited veterinary college, or have successfully completed the AMVA ECFVG Certification Program or PAVE Certification Program. Graduates from outside of the United States must answer the following questions: 1) Can you work for any employer in the United States? Yes or No; 2) Do you now or will you in the future require sponsorship in order to work with Iowa State University? Yes or No. Due to the prevailing wage rate set by the U.S. Department of Labor, H1B Visa sponsorship is not available at this time.
