The duties of the Veterinary Technician Assistant are necessary for the care of the animals within the Large Animal Clinic Sciences department in our equine herd.
Required Education and Experience:
Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
No experience required.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driverâ™s license and good driving record. Must be able to obtain State of Texas class âœCâ vehicle operatorâ™s license within 30 days of employment.
Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to multi-task and to work cooperatively with others.
Ability to lift or move heavy loads.
Ability to work with horses to desensitize and increase handle-ability.
Performs grooming, bathing and basic care of horses.
Other Requirements or Other Factors:
May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, during student absences, and on-call duty.
No inhibiting allergies to animals, feed, hay, dust or disinfectants.
Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.
Preferred Education and Experience:
One year experience in a veterinary medical setting.
Salary: $13.01 - $16.72 hourly
Assists professional staff and veterinary students with procedures and restraint. Administers medications and special diets. Assists in patient evaluations. Assists in providing support in the delivery and instruction of primary care, diagnostic services, and zoonotic disease control. Maintains complete and accurate medical records. Collects, prepares, and submits clinical pathology samples. Keeps animal facilities stocked with feed, hay, and needed supplies.
Feeds and waters animals at various locations. Observes animals for abnormalities. Performs the Afternoon Animal Welfare Observations. Creates, maintains, and places accurate Animal Use Protocol Cards on animal housing.
Cleans and disinfects animal housing facilities and feeding equipment. Disposes of animal carcasses in a prescribed manner. Maintains and services equipment. Operates forklift, field service truck, and other equipment as directed. Orders and restocks supplies for the pharmacy.
Composes and maintains Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Performance of duties may require operation of a University or other motor vehicle.
Backup to Erin Lester in managing the department's teaching herds, as well as animal compliance, inventory and reporting.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Including, but not limited to the following equipment â“ front end loader, tractor, forklift, skid steer, auger, manure spreader, UTVs, truck/trailer, pressure washer, blower/dryer.
