The Emergency Department Technician demonstrates the Mission and Values of St. Francis Hospital & Health Services as he/she performs appropriate patient care duties and clerical duties under the supervision of an RN. He/She is a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team and provides non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of the patient.
Treats information regarding patients, employees, and authorized entity information as confidential. Demonstrates understanding of HIPAA principles.
Demonstrates the clinical and critical thinking skills to obtain Vital Signs on all patient's presenting to the department, infants to geriatrics, from admission throughout the ED care and to report changes or abnormal readings to the RN. Communicates accurate and pertinent information in a timely manner. Provides a safe and secure environment for all patients appropriate to their age and condition.
Interacts appropriately with ancillary departments, as directed by the RN or physician, to provide an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.
Ensures charges are entered appropriately.
Ensures tech appropriate documentation is legible, and accurate. Demonstrates proper use of Handoff communication process when transporting patients to be admitted.
Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and to function effectively under stressful situations. Demonstrates good judgment in handling situations not covered by verbal or written instructions.
Willingly supports and actively participates in department activities such as: department meetings, open record chart audits, discharge phone calls, cleaning and restocking the unit, cleaning and wrapping instruments, and adjusting schedule and hours worked to meet the needs of the unit. Sets priorities and optimally uses work time. Accepts and acts appropriate on constructive criticism.
Exhibits willingness to master new skills and serve as a resource to others. Willingly participates in orientation of new staff members and promotes a positive learning experience for students.
Uses department exceptional conversations when interacting with patients and families (GREAT acronym). Is supportive of Achieving Exceptional Patient Care initiatives. Interacts appropriately with patients, other customers, physicians and co-workers.
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
Certified Nurse Aide, EMT license, or EMT-P License; or be enrolled in a professional or practical nursing education program and has or will complete within ninety days a fundamentals of nursing course.
Competency training completed within 1 year of hire and annually thereafter.
