The primary function of this position is to be Head Athletic Trainer for all intercollegiate athletic teams at the University of Illinois Springfield. This position will oversee medical care and comprehensive athletic training services for student-athletes including, but not limited to, medical clearance, injury prevention, care of athletic injuries and rehabilitation.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Organization and administration of a comprehensive Division II athletics training program, including medical clearance and evaluation of incoming and returning student-athletes, injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, and educational programs for University of Illinois Springfield student-athletes. Coordinate medical care for all home athletics activities and supervision of the daily operation of the UIS athletic training facilities. Manage practice and competition sites for emergency treatment and safety measures. Monitor environmental conditions to insure safety of student-athletes during practice and competition. Create, analyze, and maintain complete and accurate, confidential, medical-related records, reports, and related paperwork on student-athlete injuries, treatments, and rehabilitation for insurance, legal, and/or professional purposes. Supervise athletic training staff and coordination of the UIS Sports Medicine Team including serving as a liaison between UIS Health Services and contracted medical provider to the UIS Athletic Department. Work directly with all sport and strength and conditioning coaches regarding student-athlete welfare such as daily injury reports, musculoskeletal examinations, and safety and equipment recommendations. Hold regular office hours in the athletic training area within the Recreational and Athletic Center at UIS and attend all athletic department staff meetings as scheduled during the year. Budget, plan, organize and schedule athletic training program funds and expenditures. Teach courses in exercise science or athletic training and develop lesson plans. Mentor, supervise and instruct athletic training students through clinical experiences. Develop, implement, and oversee strategic planning and policies for the athletic training program. Assure athletic training program is compliant with all University policy, Federal & State laws and regulations, and NCAA Division II & Great Lakes Valley Conference rules and regulations. Serve as the Drug Testing Coordinator for Drug Free Sport as well as the institutional drug testing program. Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
Master’s Degree in Sports Medicine, Health Sciences, Biology, Athletic Training, Kinesiology, Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science or related field required. CPR/AED certification and NATA-BOC certification required; must be eligible for State of Illinois Athletic Trainer license. A minimum of 3 years’ athletic training experience at the collegiate level required with a preference for collegiate Head Athletic Trainer experience and instructor experience. Experience in leadership and supervisory role preferred. Ability to communicate effectively and successfully with head and assistant coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, team physicians, and administrators. Demonstrated ability to work successfully with a diverse student population. Possess technical and practical expertise in appropriate application and supervision of a wide range of rehabilitative exercises/therapy and diagnostic equipment. Excellent organization, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills needed. Evening and weekend work required as necessary with some travel expected.
