The successful candidate will perform investigations and product development on advanced molecular assays to detect tuberculosis and other priority bacterial and fungal pathogens. Studies will involve both real-time PCR and next generation DNA sequencing technologies.
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Teaching Specialist IV:
Cultures and quantitates pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria including M. Tuberculosis, and select agents requiring work in BSL3 facilities including drug resistant strains.
Conducts validation studies of molecular detection and drug resistance assays.
Performs detailed MICs of above described bacteria using various systems.
Performs DNA extraction, Sanger and next generation sequencing and analysis of assay discordant samples.
Assists in the development and testing of new assays including primer and molecular probe design.
Assists in conducting a continuous program of research and development. Evaluates existing procedures and proposes modifications or changes in order to keep the methodology and procedures current.
Assists with the instructing and training of students, fellows, technicians and laboratory assistants as required.
Keeps detailed records of procedures and experiments. May be required to compile data and present results.
