BASIC FUNCTION: The Lab Tech performs diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states. Performs manual and automated routine medical lab tests such as urinalyses and blood counts. Prepares speciments for microscop examination. Operations laboratory equipment including centrifuges, dry bath incubators, and blood bank refrigerators. Conducts only waived and moderated level testing as classified by CLIA. Reports test results as accurately as possible to ensure quality control. Prepares samples for testing. Uses microscopes, a variety of chemicals, computers and precision instruments to perform complex analyses. May perform supervisory and administrative duties under the direction of the Laboratory Director. Performs clerical tasks related to laboratory services. Follows standardized procedures. Performs a variety of tasks and other duties as assigned.
Education: Completion of a two-year associate degree program in Medical Laboratory Technology or BS in Medical Technology or equivalent. Must be ASCP / AMT certified or equivalent. Must have current BLS card within 3 months of initial employment and maintain current status throughout GRHD employment.
Experience: 1-2 years of professional experience in the role preferred. Must be eighteen years of age.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, procedures and regulations within the field. Must be knowledgeable in the following areas of laboratory medicine: microbiology, hematology, chemistry, blood bank, urinalysis, serology and immunology. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and instruments to perform laboratory testing. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Good hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity.
Skilled in identifying problems and recommending solutions. Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, co-workers and the public. Must be skilled in venipuncture, arterial blood collection and general specimen collection.
Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with precision and accuracy. Ability to distinguish between fine color graduations. Ability to work independently and effectively. Ability to react calmly and effectively in an emergency situation. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Must be proficient within six (6) months of hire in Network, MS Office, Kronos, ECI, Mayo, Meditech, Carescripts, Allscripts and Galactica.
