The Perioperative Care Technician, reporting to the Clinical Manager, is responsible for supporting the day-to-day activities of the Surgery Center as assigned. Tasks include, but are not limited to; patient care assignments-coordinated by a registered nurse. Tasks include, but are not limited to; patient care in Pre and Post Op areas-such as taking and documenting vital signs, preparing patients for surgery, patient transport between clinical areas, IV discontinuation, patient discharge, stocking and inventory of supplies, assisting RNs during pain block procedures and performing 12 lead EKGs. The candidate will demonstrate a commitment to team work and take the initiative to find work during down times.
The PCT will work under the direction of a registered nurse in one of the following clinical assignments: Pre-Op, Phase I, or Phase II.
PCT will be responsible for monitoring surgical dressing and notifying the RN of changes, IV maintenance, patient vital signs, blood glucose monitoring via accucheck, transport patients between patient care areas, transport specimens, clean and restock patient areas and departmental supplies using proper aseptic technique.
Practices good body mechanics when moving equipment, instruments and assisting with patient transfers.
Perform patient care activities such as patient hydration, nutrition, assist patient with clothing change and transfer to car upon discharge.
Practices safe use of hazardous chemicals such as formalin for specimen preservation, glutaraldehyde for cold sterilization and cleaning agents.
Assist RN with monitoring during invasive procedures such as pain or regional blocks.
Performs routine support tasks as assigned by Clinical Manager or RN Charge:
Monthly cleaning of supply locations (carts, chairs, rooms and equipment)
Order and restock supplies as needed.
Assists patients to change clothes before and after surgery.
Run errands as directed, to include lab specimens, supplies, loaned equipment, central supply and pharmacy.
Department maintenance-stock/order nutritional supplies and maintains kitchen area.
Restock and order linens as necessary.
Transport patients to SMH (x-rays, admissions, etc) and for discharge.
Reinforce post-op patient and family teaching (cryocuffs, ice packs, crutch use).
Assist in Phase I recovery as requested. Transfer patients to Phase II.
Perform and transmit 12 lead EKG's.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma.
1-3 years of relevant work experience.
CPR certification or ability to obtain certification within first six months of employment.
Strong work history and good attendance record.
Wisconsin certification as a Nursing Assistant.
