Directs the daily operations of ARC/OSRF (Animal Resources Center/Office of Shared Research Facilities) primarily in the areas of facilities operations and investigator support services management. Develops operational policies to ensure strategic goals are met and oversees their implementation. Ensures compliance of staff withorganizational, University and other relevant policies and guidelines. Assists in planning and developing, multi-year operating and capital budgets. Conceives and directs special projects related to the business of the organizational unit as assigned by the Director of Strategic Operations and is a key source of information for the members of the ARC/OSRF senior management team. Departmental responsibilities include: investigator support, AIMS database oversight, space allocation, security systems and regulatory compliance.
Act as a liaison/resource person dealing with investigator requests, coordinates and oversees the integrity/accuracy of data/information relevant to investigator information and research.
Proactively interact with faculty and research staff as needed to effectively and timely respond to all requests, inquiries, and complaints about adequate support in the animal and core facilities.
Coordinate investigator special projects involving research animals and/or specialized equipment/caging/supplies in both ARC and OSRF.
Manage the collection of data from the animal facilities, compile information on animal population densities (overcrowding), organize information on incidences of cage floods, verify presence of clean caging and supplies and ensures compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) by inspecting animal rooms.
Produce draft/final reports, charts and present information to management on a monthly basis.
Receive and monitor all husbandry related complaints from investigative staff and direct resolution with CR supervisory staff as well as oversee ARC-IACUC management system (AIMS) and manage animal facility access security system and animal facility training program requirements.
Communicate to investigators the conditions for access and how to complete them and ensure that investigators have fulfilled all relevant IACUC/ARC requirements/training in order to obtain access to the facilities.
Provide investigators support and assistance in completing other types of requirements and/or training as well as interact with other campus departments (Radiation Safety, Employee Health and Safety, Security, Building Management) to ensure training and access standards are enforced.
Oversee database for functionality and enhancement implementation working directly with the project manager(s) and developers and provide support and assistance to core technical directors and staff as needed in response to equipment maintenance/repair, purchasing, space planning, training or other requests.
Act as back-up to the ARC financial manager for all financial close processes.
Assist with other ad hoc financial reports as requested by the Associate Dean for Research Resources.
Partner with the OSRF Senior Financial Analyst to develop financial reporting for the core facilities.
Assist in the annual operating budget development for both ARC and OSRF.
Work with teammates to build ad hoc reports and analysis to support the planning process.
Audit and evaluate CR productivity through monthly performance metrics, and maintain database information.
Direct CR supervisory staff for processing and implementation of PI requests.
Maintain information systems for ARC/CR training.
Access to animal facilities and non-compliance issues.
Work with the CR supervisory staff to understand facility issues, implement change, and promote efficiency.
Oversee quality control diagnostics testing of environmental samples from animal facilities and equipment (water quality testing, biological indicators, etc.).
Assist IACUC staff with information systems relating to Occupational Health and Safety Program, ARC training requirements and animal care and use protocol information.
Take part in post-approval monitoring ensuring that investigator requests.
Comply with approved procedures and methods described in their Animal Care and Use Protocols.
Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal/communication skills required.
Willingness to work successfully as a member of a team.
Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, graduate students and various administrative offices at all levels of the University.
Ability to prioritize required.
Strong decision making skills and ability to work under pressure of frequent deadlines required.
High level of tact and discretionary judgment with regard to access of confidential material required.
Ability to work on more than one project at one time and meet deadlines. Also, ability to analyze and solve problems required.
Must be detailed and organized and respect confidentiality required.
Bachelorâ™s degree required.
Previous work experience in an academic environment and biomedical research required.
Two years of experience in a scientific animal research setting or academic environment required.
One year supervisor experience preferred.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
Knowledge of regulatory compliance and document control process preferred.
Advanced computer knowledge and skills preferred: excel, etc.
Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills required.
