SQL Developer Information Technology Department The SQL Developer serves within the development team for long-term projects. This is an entry-level position. This position will analyze and produce interfaces relative to the institutional needs for student information and faculty/staff administration within the SQL Server databases. This position shall provide consulting and technical assistance while interacting with other developers/programmers in IT Department and is a critical source for end-user analysis of programming needs. The position will conceive, plan, develop, implement and support database applications for WVSOM in general with concentrations in baseline and custom SQL database systems as applicable. The incumbent will serve as backup to primary IT staff responsible for institutional dashboard. This position reports to the Banner DBA/Development Manager. General Duties and Responsibilities Database and Web Application Development - SQL programming and database development/design including interactive web and mobile web design.
- Analyze user needs before designing application.
- Analyze existing database for possible conversion/inclusion in application.
- Modify existing databases, applications, and interface api's for efficiency and expansion.
- Test and document applications, including Standard Operating Procedures
- Interface analysis/design/development for internal/external 3rd party applications
- Packages, functions, procedures within SQL server databases and with exposure to the Oracle SQL Banner database relative to the institutional dashboard
- Assist in query building for the dashboard as a lead for the Reporting and Data Administrator
- Resource and support role for the Reporting and Data Administrator in producing reports to the various campus and external entities (Departmental directors, WVSOM statistician, WV Higher Education Policy Commission and the CTO for IT audit requests).
- Assist the Reporting and Data Administrator maintain the appropriate web interface, security roles, and data queries for the institutional dashboard from various points (i.e. multiple databases and historical reports).
- Utilization of various reporting tools for SQL and Oracle databases
- The positon will install, configure and maintain database software (SQL Server), web server software (Apache, IIS) and application server software (Groovy/Grails, ColdFusion, Perl, ASP.NET)
Maintenance and Training of Database Systems - Modify existing web applications
- Monitor database performance, identifying and resolving issues
- Troubleshoot problems including procedure, access and security issues
- Train users (Students and Employees) on operations, function and limitations of applications
Security of Database Systems - Ensuring data is clean and handled properly
- Ensuring permissions on the website, database and within applications are proper for each user
- Responding to and understanding new vulnerabilities in 3rd party software.
Installation, Configuration, and Maintenance of Support Servers - Configure and maintain database software (SQL Server)
- Create and maintain appropriate backup and recovery procedures for databases and SQL servers
- Install, configure and maintain web server software (Apache 2, IIS, and various Java EE containers) Install, configure and maintain application server software (ColdFusion, Perl, PHP, .NET)
- Install, configure and maintain 3rd party application software (Track-It!, Jasig CAS)
- SQL scripting as the basis for most development, with good design practice and program logic. The SQL Developer will design, create, debug, maintain, and implement programs that interact with multiple SQL Server databases operating on a Windows Server platform including procedures, packages, triggers within the database, operating system shell scripting and web based development tools.
- Understanding of various sub-systems, and provide programming integration and maintenance across all systems. The SQL Developer will be part of the programming team that supports end users in the various departments across campus including Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Statewide campus, Clinical Evaluation Center and the Business Office. This requires the ability to troubleshoot a variety of complex issues relating to the differing business processes across campus.
- The SQL Developer will support programming in relation to the custom databases and their integration with Oracle in a Linux environment. This will require close collaboration with other SQL, Oracle and Web developers. A major portion of the position will require development of good end-user reporting, data integrity checking, and forms development for custom applications.
- The SQL Developer will perform other related duties as assigned or directed.
Compensation This is a full-time, non-classified position; it is exempt from FLSA regulations concerning overtime; salary is commensurate with education and experience, plus a full state benefits package. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8:00-4:30 schedule and may require evening and weekend scheduling as needed. The weekly schedule for this position will be established between the supervisor and the employee and approved given the needs of the department and the institution. This position has been designated as Essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM.
