Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University (ISU), located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, clinical or tenure track faculty appointment in the area of Food Animal Ambulatory Medicine in the Veterinary Field Services (VFS) unit of the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM). ISU's Veterinary Field Services provides individual animal and herd health services for beef, dairy, swine, sheep, goats, and camelids via fully equipped mobile veterinary trucks equipped to accommodate the high-interest in farm animal medicine among our veterinary students and to provide veterinary service to local producers. Services include year-round, 24-hour emergency care, diagnostics, routine healthcare, surgical services, breeding and fetal services, herd health programs, milking system analysis, and much more.
The department is seeking a candidate who will join a department with 54 food animal focused faculty members and 120 staff employees. The person in this position will commit the majority of their time to professional practice and outreach associated with delivering and growing veterinary clinical services to clients of the ISU's VFS unit, while teaching 4th year veterinary students in the Field Services rotation and other clinically based rotations.
The current clientele of the ISUVFS unit are primarily beef cattle but there are also substantial amounts of dairy, small ruminant, swine, and other cases. The person in this position may also play a limited role in managing cases in the ISU Food Animal and Camelid Hospital (FACH). Responsibilities may also include occasional teaching of undergraduate students in Animal Science. Opportunities exist to become involved in collaborative research in food supply veterinary medicine.
The successful candidate will also have a collegial, collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in departmental programs and committees.
Required Education and Experience:
- DVM or equivalent degree - One year of clinical experience in a food animal veterinary practice - Documented experience working with herd managers, animal care providers, researchers, and/or students at various levels of training
In addition, positions at the following ranks will require: CLINICALASSOCIATEPROFESSOR: a minimum of 5 years of experience in a progressive, diverse, high quality veterinary medical practice CLINICALPROFESSOR: a minimum of 10 years of experience in a progressive, diverse, high quality veterinary medical practice ASSISTANTPROFESSOR: evidence of experience conducting research or other scholarly activity ASSOCIATE OR FULLPROFESSOR: an established record of experience and scholarship appropriate to each rank at Iowa State University
Preferred Education and Experience:
- An advanced degree in a field related to food animal production medicine - Additional years of practice experience in a progressive, diverse, high quality food animal production medicine practice
1) State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before first date of employment
2) Category II veterinary accreditation under the USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program on or before the first day of employment
3) Eligible to receive DEA licensing.
4) Must have and maintain a valid U.S. state driver's license and the ability to be authorized to drive University vehicles
Board certification by the American Board of Veterinary Specialties or the European Board of Veterinary Specialiation in a recognized specialty area relevant to food and fiber animals; individuals who are in the process of becoming board certified in a recognized specialty area of veterinary medicine related to food and fiber animals are encouraged to apply
