The Veterinary Technician Assistant, under supervision, assists the veterinary technicians in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) performing a variety of basic functions of limited complexity.
Required Education And Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Two years of related experience in animal care.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software programs.
Interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Other Requirements or Other Factors:
Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.
Requires participating in Holiday coverage, as needed.
Provide quality customer service to internal and external customers/clients.

Experience in a medical or veterinary setting.

Knowledge of Veterinary terminology.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA).

Maintains a clean and organized work environment in the operating room and other work areas. Cleans and disinfects equipment. Operates commercial steamer, sterilizing cages, stalls, equipment and environmental surfaces. Assists in laundry services as needed. Cleans, packages, and sterilizes instruments and supplies. Performs basic equipment maintenance and cleaning. Reports equipment malfunctions to Supervisor. Performs all duties necessary for instrument decontamination, cleaning, packing, wrapping, and sterilization. Performs daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning of the entire surgery facility including the operating room suites, sub-sterile hallway, central sterile and decontamination rooms, storage areas, OR locker rooms, break room, and all instrument handling areas.
Maintains service inventory pull sheets, pack lists, and surgeonâ™s preferences according to departmental guidelines. Procures and stocks supplies from storage room and pharmacy. Pulls necessary sterile supplies, sterile instruments, and equipment appropriate for the assigned and posted procedure. Sets up the room prior to patient arrival in the proper manner according to hospital and OR standards. Utilizes departmental checklist to document and account for all suture, blades, hypodermic needles, sponges, and instruments at the beginning and closing of the surgical procedure. Uses proper PPE and follows safety guidelines when handling soiled items at all times. Submits a daily pharmacy order, and convertor order for supplies in the operating room. Drops off plasma to LACSS each day, picks up the pharmacy order each day, and delivers the order to SA OR. Maintains a stocked, cleaned, and organized instrument decontamination room. Processes instruments as they arrive to the decontamination area. Unloads the laundry/OR dumbwaiter of instruments and linens throughout the day. Stocks items in their proper locations. Assists with quarantine of instruments and runs biological quality control of instruments. Restocks any unused sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment.
Observes and reports behavior problems or conditions that develop with animals while under our care to appropriate medical staff verbally and in writing with the use of a computer. Observes the sterile field and reports any break in sterile technique or contamination of the sterile field. Assists with opening sterile supplies, instrument packs, and other requested sterile devices on to the sterile field. Provides patient restraint for medical procedures. Assists with properly positioning the patient on to the surgical table. Assists with sterile prep for the surgical procedure. Assists with documentation on the nursing record while patient is in surgery. Assists with entering charges in VMIS for the patient or clinical services. Assists with patient transport from gurney to surgical table.
Performs other duties as assigned.
