Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Genetic Counselor.
In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for assisting patients and their families in understanding hereditary cancer, as well as serving as educator and resource person for other health care professionals and the general public. Serves as educator and resource person for other health care professionals and the general public. Job Responsibilities: - Provides genetic counseling for patients and their families referred for the High Risk Program at NYU Langone, based at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center.
- Provides tailored cancer risk assessment for the individual/family for hereditary predisposition to cancer.
- Effectively counsels patients and their families. Interviews patients and their families to review the family history of cancer, provides individualized cancer risk assessment, and effectively provides individual and group counseling to patients and their families.
- Reviews complex cases with one of the hereditary cancer specialist physicians in the High Risk Program.
- Ability to collaborate effectively as a member of the health care team and to take initiative and leadership as appropriate.
- Directs patients and their families to appropriate community agencies for long-term care or long-term follow-up counseling. Effectively directs patients and their families to community agencies when appropriate. Seeks out community-based resources in order to better serve our patients.
- Develops educational program and protocols for medical students and residents, genetics fellows and genetics counseling students. Takes an active role in educating all of the interdisciplinary team members regarding the role of genetics in providing services to our patients.
- Provides genetics support to research studies as necessary. Effectively participates in educational activities and brings back knowledge learned to share with the Supportive Services department.
- Participate in educational activities of the High Risk Program, including training or medical students, resident, fellows, and genetic counselors.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: To qualify you must have Master's Degree in genetic counseling from an accredited program. Board certification or eligibility for board certification as a genetic counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC). Preferred Qualifications: Previous on-the-job experience as a genetic counselor. Cancer genetic counseling experience is essential. Experience working with multicultural audiences. Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
