The Assistant Director of Internal Communications works with the Associate Dean of Communications and External Relations to develop and support broad-based communications strategies with a particular focus on internal communications. S/he will work with the Associate Dean in strategic communications planning and in managing tactical elements of communications. This will include working closely with the Harvard Medical School (HMS) Leadership Group to plan and implement internal communications for the HMS community, including Quad staff, Quad faculty, affiliate faculty and students to ensure there is effective and meaningful engagement throughout HMS. S/he also will work with other members of the team to help plan and implement strategies to expand the external presence of the School's educational priorities through the development and coordination of events such as the Longwood Seminars. S/he will support, coordinate, and advance the effectiveness of communications activities and monitor the latest developments in technology that enable improved communications. S/he will help assess and evaluate the efficacy of communications tools in use across the School and externally. S/he oversees plans to increase the presence of HMS through innovative forms of outreach, both print and electronic, among multiple constituencies. S/he manages the Senior Communications Specialist and works collaboratively with other members of the team to ensure HMS communications are creative, effective and measurable. Participates in strategic communications planning with the associate dean and other members of the communications team and takes the lead in implementing the tactical elements of the internal communications plans. Works collaboratively with the HMS Leadership Group and Human Resources to ensure program planning for internal communications is infused with effective feedback and direction from representatives from throughout the school. Advises the Associate Dean and other senior leadership on the need and structure for Town Meetings, School-wide communications and forums for interactive engagement with the community. Supports the Associate Dean by sharing responsibilities with other members of the team in responding to a wide variety of inquiries and issues that are managed by the office, including those beyond the scope of internal communications. Supports the development of content for e-commons. Develops content for a publication and other communications for internal audiences. Will assist the Editorial Director and Art Director on the editing and production of the publication and other materials. Employs good judgment in ensuring all communications are high quality and effective. Develops systems to engage and obtain feedback from the community. Works with the web team and the communications specialist to manage content for the administrative website. Develop internal announcements for emergent situations in response to inclement weather and issues in the press. As a member of the office beat system, writes material for a variety of HMS vehicles to include the Dean's Report, Harvard Medicine News@HMS, the web and other publications as they evolve. Helps create presentations for leadership meetings. May be asked to support the media office with limited on call responsibilities. Attends meetings in absence of the Associate Dean and reports back with content and deliverables. Manages the Senior Communications Specialist in the planning and execution of a variety of events including the Longwood Seminars, Talks@12 and other internal and external events.

BA/BS required, preferably with emphasis on communications. A minimum of 5 years increasingly responsible experience preferably working in an academic institution or health care institution with in-depth experience in internal communications, publication, science writing or related experience.
Substantial knowledge of communications, media relation, including familiarity with all forms of existing and emerging media (print and electronic). Broad knowledge of issues and culture of higher education institutions. Uses excellent judgment in advising and decision-making. Superior written, interpersonal, editing and communications skills. Deep understanding of processes of internal and external communications and marketing and ability to develop and win support for a cooperative vision. Demonstrated effectiveness in leading projects that cut across departments. Ability to provide superior client service to all levels of the organization with diplomacy, tact and confidence. Exceptional attention to detail. Ability to plan and manage multiple projects simultaneously and balance priorities. Ability to use independent judgment and be entrusted with confidential information.
