The Director of Individual Giving is a leader on a team that raises $5-15M from individuals and family foundations to advance the fundraising priorities established by the Leadership Team of Medicine & Biological Sciences Development (MBSD) and the Dean/CEO of The University of Chicago Medicine (UCM). S/he will partner with his/her team of 4-8 FTEs to reach this fundraising goal with not only best practices but also creativity and sound strategic tactics. S/he works with specific Divisions, Departments, and/or Programs. S/he collaborates with the Donor Relations team to individualize donor stewardship and in many cases, designs and implements stewardship him/herself. The Director of Individual Giving will be asked by MBSD leadership to staff Trustees, Trustee committees and/or working groups of faculty.
S/he works with the CEO/Dean, Trustees, and medical and administrative leaders of the Medical Center, as well as leading donors to UCM and University. S/he has his/her own portfolio of 75 to 125 prospective donors and donors and his/her team will be responsible for a total of 200 - 500 prospective donors and donors. She has a personal fundraising goal of $2 - 10M. S/he will manage a five-figure operating budget.
Responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, gift closure, and stewardship of prospective donors and donors in his/her own portfolio as well as managing the efforts of his/her direct reports to similarly advance relationships of the individuals, families, and foundations in their portfolios.
Design, manage and implement planned giving activities and be responsible for gifts of estates, trusts, and various other financial venues that reflect financial planning and deferred giving opportunities.
Qualifies individuals, rating their capability and likelihood to make a philanthropic gift to MBSD and wisely and judiciously uses the resources of the Research team to augment the identification and qualification of prospective donors.
Using a Moves Management process, conceives of, promotes, and coordinates the interaction of potential and current donors with faculty and other individuals who have the ability to deepen the prospective donorâ™s engagement with the University.
Conceives of and implements solicitation strategies and participates in the vast majority of these solicitations.
Conceives of, develops, and writes fundraising proposals and in so doing will collaborates with the Individual Giving team and with the Development Marketing & Communications team.
Responsible for supervising a team up to four.
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, characterized by the ability to listen, to speak, and to write well with a strong commitment to customer service is required.
Excellent organizational skills, and a high degree of flexibility and initiative is required.
Ability to travel and attend evening and weekend functions when necessary is required.
Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University.
Familiarity with The University of Chicago is preferred.
A bachelorâ™s degree or higher is required.
A minimum of five years of experience in development or a related field such as public relations, sales, marketing, or non-profit management is required.
Experience planning and managing programs is required.
Experience soliciting and closing major gifts is preferred.
Planned giving experience is preferred
Experience managing volunteers is preferred.
Experience in a university setting or a similarly complex institution is preferred.
Supervisory experience is preferred.
Experience developing and monitoring budgets is preferred.
Ability to sit for 2 hours to 4 hours.
