This position has veterinary support responsibilities primarily on the Brown University campus, including on-call coverage for research programs involving the care and use of laboratory animals. This individual provides back-up care for the Affiliated Hospitals laboratory animal research programs. Its occupant (in consultation with the Director and Associate Director of Animal Care) participates in programs of veterinary care including preventative health measures (physical exams, animal health monitoring programs and behavioral assessments) and emergent care; provides surgical and anesthesia support; advises and trains animal care technicians and veterinary technicians; develops and provides training to researchers using animals; assists in maintaining compliance with Public Health Service and U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations and guidelines; and may advise/assist Principal Investigators in the design and performance of animal care and use protocols.
Must have a degree in veterinary medicine from an AVMA accredited school.
Must be licensed in at least one US state and be willing to become licensed in the state of RI.
Must have clinical skills in medicine, surgery and anesthesia. Experience in a laboratory animal setting or with exotic species preferred but not required.
Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills. Experience in developing and implementing training programs preferred.
Must be able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
This individual must work effectively with a number of people to foster and maintain high-quality animal care and use programs and facilities
Must be able to pass a background check, education verification and pre-employment drug screening test
Must work effectively with staff in varying roles to foster and maintain high-quality animal care and use programs and facilities.
Must be able to provide strong clinical support with little or no direct supervision in a heavily regulated setting. Must be able to effectively train individuals with varying backgrounds in aspects of animal care and veterinary support.
Must act in conjunction with the Director and Associate Director to maintain the integrity of the Brown University/Affiliated Hospital research effort utilizing animals. These individuals must be responsive to varying and ever-changing needs while maintaining a cohesive animal care and use program.
