The Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology is seeking a Physician Assistant. The Physician Assistant position is intended to supplement the faculty physician on-site to provide Hopkins quality continuum of patient care and to work collaboratively with the care team to meet established patient goals. Responsible for performing many patient oriented tasking including, interviewing patients, taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, making tentative diagnoses, procedures including bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures and prescribing appropriate treatments.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform routine scheduled, urgent, and emergent medical evaluations, order laboratory and diagnostic studies, prescribe medications and treatments, coordinate medical consultations, and arrange for medical follow-up at discharge for sick patients both in the outpatient and inpatient setting with non-malignant as well as malignant hematological disorders.
Ability to incorporate into practice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary health care team members. Analytical ability necessary to diagnose patients' illnesses to develop and implement plans of action for long and short term management. Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team, patients, and family.
Follows progress of patients including history and physical exam, ordering, performing, and interpreting laboratory and radiological data and establishing and implementing a plan of care based on those interpretations and establishing and implementing a plan of care based on those interpretations and observations. Makes referrals to appropriate specialties.
Follows long term progress of patients including history and physical examination, orders and interprets tests and assesses status. Provides outside referring physicians with reports on patients by ordering, interpreting, collecting, and communicating results and recommendations to the physician. Consults with referring physicians regarding questions specific to the patient's course and/or complications, suggesting treatment plans and making appropriate referrals for further follow up. Provides education to patient and family members regarding diagnosis, complications, treatment and medications in order to provide them with continuous information.
Performs, but is not limited to the following advance procedures such as bone marrow aspiration, lumbar puncture (delivery of intrathecal chemotherapy) and other procedures as necessary.
Provider will have the opportunity to collaborate in building a hematology research program.
Shifts to be scheduled at Bayview Medical Center and East Baltimore clinics.
Other duties may be assigned by the employee's immediate supervisor, division management or a healthcare provider in order to ensure an efficient office that will assist the Division in fulfilling its mission.
Bachelor's degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Minimum of three years of related clinical PA experience, preferred. Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Familiarity with regulations and standards governing PAs in the State of Maryland.
Strong oral and written communication skills required.
Demonstrated ability for self-direction and initiation required. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team required. Demonstrated customer service skills required. Must be able to prioritize responsibilities and work in a fast-paced environment.
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
